| 1 way cable modem...my only option.
After doing some research in regards to high speed internet, I have found that 1 way cable modem is my only option (over dialup, and ISDN is too expensive). I am way too far from the CO to ever get DSL and since I live in the middle of nowhere, the only option I have is 1 way cable modem. 2 way cable modem is 1-2 years away. Adelphia doesn't have any one-way cable modems available to lease. Where can I get one? I noticed in the forums people have mentioned the Motorola 3100. I can't find any place that is selling one. Can anyone help me in finding a one-way modem that would work with adelphia powerlink one-way?
Thanks, -Q |

| reply to hobgoblin Ok, this is what I've got. Adelphia only supports 1 way cable modem in my neighborhood. Can I use a 2 way cable modem on a 1 way system with a regular dialup modem?
Can I lease a 2 way modem and use it on a 1 way system? I noticed most of the two way cable modems do not mention any dialup upstream.
Adelphia stated that they don't have any more 1 way cable modems to lease.
Suggestions?

Well they should not be selling the service then.

| They (Adelphia) said I can get one myself....has advantages and disadvantages. Trying to see what modems I can get and/or if they would work. Most of the ones for sale appear to state 2 way. I don't the details about 1 way systems, how the dialup return works, if a 2 way doscis modem would work, etc. |

| Quantas,
Firstly what modem you can use would depend on which area you are in. You can not use a 2 way modem and your dial up modem in any area. You will be very lucky to find any one way modem "new". I don't think they make them any more. My advice to you is to ask someone in your area who has the service what modem they are using and research it from there.

| I did some research on one way or actually dual mode modems. At least with regards to surfboards. About the only place you can find them is on ebay. These modems (per motorola and GI) where not released for consumer sale, only for cable operators. If you find one, make sure you reset the defaults. It caused a lot of problems and made a lot of people here mad.
Make sure it has a "d" after the number designation (i.e. sb3100d) if you buy a surfboard. I was unable to find anything anwhere else.
Good Luck |

Wow that I have to admit is stupid if they have the service available they should have the modems to support the service, I would think. Maybe if you set up a install appointment the installer would have it on the truck anyways I dont know I used to have the 1 way service for a month before the upgrade 2 years ago and it was pretty horrible, you may be better off sticking with Dial Up or checking on Sat Service. -- Current Speed Record 2788/116 |

| I did not ask for that.......im just saying.....why offer a service if u cant supply the hardware.....i have powerlink at a different adress in the middle of nowhere (URBANA) but i am moving closer into town.....(FREDERICK) and u would that it would be offered there .....it doesnt makes sense why they can offer 1 way.....i bet it supports 2 way allready....theyre just waiting ...to fool us all.....im just a little upset the fact that they told me to go onto ebay and look for a modem...that doesnt even exist anymore and isnt in production.....they put me on a waiting list for 3 months to wait for some one else to give up there 1 way modem....so they can give it to me...by that time 2 way will be available...or at least they say.....last year this time when it was gs communications they said it would be offerd in a few months...well its been a year....they just need to get their act together.....its just frustrating.... so u can quit bein such a lamer and let me agree with dude who is also upset with adel.....when they offer service that actually goes along with what they say or advertise it as....then ill be ok...but until than.....theyre on my shit list... |

I think you answered the question about the lack of modems in your area for Adelphia.
No one makes 1-way modems anymore, the only supply available is the existing, issued modems...
The service is available, but the modem isn't and they recommend you look for ways to procure your own modem if you want the service sooner than a possible 3 month wait.
Would you rather Adelphia tell you, sorry the service is not available at all? Then what would you say when you found out all that was needed to get service was the right modem? I think you would be a bit more pissed about that. -- Check out Hobgoblin's cable modem tech links. |

| reply to Frankie2toneD I am also in Frederick. I have had the one way for over three years now. During that time they have been less than honest with schedule for 2-way rollout. I live in a brand new section of the city, but no 2 way yet. Each time I call, for three years, I have been told "only a few more months." They have reached the point where it is difficult to believe anything they say. The one way modem I have is a USR internal model that uses an ISA slot. The last drivers were released three years ago. I can't even upgrade my server since no drivers are available for NT, 2000 or XP. I share your frustration, but have not seen any alternatives other than satellite which has its own issues. DSL is not available. Maybe someone will launch a decent fixed wireless service here. |
