Volunteer programmers?

Well, I'm trying to gather a few volunteers to help code a BBR RPG MUD. I advertised in the gaming forum as well, but I think this is where the majority of the programmers are. I'd prefer to code the mud in C, but it seems that C++ is the popular programming language today. I can work either way.

If I can get enough support, maybe justin can allow us to have our own project forum for development. For those of you who aren't sure want RPG MUD is, It's an online, multiplayer, FREE, text-based role-playing game. They're not appeasing to those who haven't tried them, but once you play for an hour or two its more addictive then most any game you've played.

So I'm looking for 2 more programmers. I've got 1, and possibly two now. Let me know if you're interested. I think it would be great to start up another community for BBR members.

What server are you going to run?

It depends. If we have someone who has a broadband connection with a decent enough upload and a static IP for development then perhaps we can go with that. Otherwise, I know of reliable mud-hosting services. It all depends on whether or not something is able to be donated for free or if I would have to supply it myself.

If I have to supply it myself, it'd be running on a mud-hosting server that runs Redhat 7.2. I currently run my own mud server off of there. I haven't run this by justin yet because I wanted to show some support. Perhaps if this thing can be a BBR project, he may have some HD space and a username and an open port for us to fiddle with.

Actually, I mean which engine or codebase are you using or are you going to develop your own?

Well that depends on what the volunteers here are good with. No need to go with a C codebase if I can get 5 C++ volunteers.

I was doing some hunting around, and I really like »sourceforge.net/projects/openmu/ as an open codebase.

If I get enough volunteers, I'll ask them for permission to use the codebase if they'll release it. Otherwise, I'm still looking around for an easy to modify C++ codebase. I'm open to suggestions.

Unless someone here really wants to work on developing their own and spend all the time to do it, I'd rather not reinvent the wheel unnecessarily.

Servers.

Once you pick a server and theme, I'll help you. I need a reason to get seriously back into linux & C or whatever anyway.

But, I swear if you call it Archivisville -- I quit.

You do know what you are getting into right?

I won't call it Archivisville. I've got some pretty big plans. I'll consider you the second one to add to this project as a coder. I'll see if I can get the other person to register a name here on dslreports.

If I can get one more person to volunteer to join in, I'll ask for some hosting help from justin.

Let me reinterate what tormented said. I know that he was playing, but even still you can trust him on that. If you name it that, he will be nowhere to be found!

Considering that my plans are to make it a heavy heavy role-playing scene, I don't think Archivisville would work. I'd never call it that. Do you know any C++?

Well I think anything based on diku/merc will be best for a server...at least that is my vote.

Yeah I feel the same way tormented. I just haven't seen any diku/merc C++ codebases. Have you found any?

I was also looking for some circle-type codebases. diku/merc or circle would be something I'd go with.

My current mud is an ACK codebase, based upon diku/merc.

Which is fine with me.

Agraulus has some C experience.

Are you better in C then C++? I could go either way right now.

Well,

»mudworld.inetsolve.com/articles/heirarchy/

Pick one I can deal with most of them.

Then we can start moving forward.

You said heavy roleplay? What theme?

Fantasy mideival. Wizards, monks, rangers, druids, etc. Elves, Humans, orcs.

That's it generally, there will be a lot of things in the RPG world that won't be elsewhere. Storylines customized to our own, races that haven't been heard of before, but will be an intricate and believable part of the game. I don't want this to be "just another MUD". I have a wild imagination, and I hope you do as well. I will talk to justin to see if he has any help he could offer.

I can deal with either. But, I wouldn't say I am even close to good with either one.

But -- all the muds I have ever dealt with are in C.
