Is this a half ringer or someghing else in SNI

I took my SNI apart looking for a half ringer and this is what I found. What the heck is it and do I need it?

Yep, that's a half-ringer in the wild!

Unless you can find a helpful phone guy around, I've been told that some people do this (I think MY SNI may have even had this mod done by SOMEBODY...hehe)...

...stop by Home Depot and get some 3M gel-filled splices (Scotchlok IDC Communications Connectors, p/n 80-6103-5287-6... the red ones). Cut all four wires close to the half-ringer, and using two splices connect the red wires together, and then connect the green wires together (just press the unstripped wires into the splice, and compress it with your favorite pair of pliers). Push the spliced wires back into the space formerly occupied by the half-ringer, replace the cover, and button everything up. Toss the half-ringer into the dumpster!

...that's what I've HEARD that some people do

Dan

Thanks Good Ol Dan. I've got the good old scotch locks from the Depot - used them to install my splitter. Funny that this doesn't look even close to the half ringer that ADSL guy posted in his FAQ.... I guess mine's newer and better : lol

Good Ol Dan is correct....I used to do it all the time when I used to install for ASI. Just make sure you get quality scotch locks. The cheap ones will drastically degrade you line.

One note of caution, some MTU's or Half Ringers have an extra resistor wired in line between the carbons and the chip. If you miss that component, and you might not be able to see it if it is on the network side of your SNI, you may still experience trouble.
