SOCOM / gameshark / online / cheating

I copy pasted this from the gameshark boards:

Apparently they have this Gameshark uber employee called Nick who creates the codes for games. Currently gameshark codes cannot be created by owners of gameshark.

Nick was responding in a thread filled with kiddies demanding SOCOM codes *now* *now* *now*, in request to someone saying just to release an infinite ammo code whether it worked online or not:

Over to Nick:

said by nick:

"I really don't think it would be possible to do cheating "rooms", because we would have to give Sony knowledge of how exactly we hack games, and that could jeopardize our status; assuming they DON'T know how we are hacking. Assuming all the aforementioned is true, I WILL NOT make codes that work online. There will be codes to help those who need single player assistance. I'll work all weekend if I have to.

You might say I'm kissing Sony's ass, and I am. Sony would devestate anyone who created online codes, interfering with the rights of each person to recieve the online, CHEAT FREE experience which they have paid for.

My suggeston to anyone who WANTS online cheats is that you use the NON-ONLINE cheats I will give you on Monday to get as good as you can at the game in preperaton for the REAL PLAYERS."

One disturbing thing is with the above thread -- Nick does NOT have the broadband adaptor. He asks for a *user* to volunteer to test his codes to check they do not work in the online game..

What chance is it that this random *user* would keep an online infinite ammo code to himself, or forget it, after helping "Nick" find out it worked online?

Well, it's a step in the right direction. However, Nick needs to get himself the Sony adapter and test it out for himself. Leaks happen when a third party gets involved.

Ha! Their damn mecha of code creators is telling them "NO" and waving his finger at them. Thats funny.

Gameshark should be illegal anyways. It has no legitimate purpose, and using it not only jacks up your system, but it voids your warranty or any future work to be done on your system. Sony should get a big campaign against it, like printing in the console manual "DO NOT USE GAMESHARK, It voids your warranty, etc..".

Hey if someone wants to cheat in single player.. I can care less.. but cheating RUINED phantasy star online for the dreamcast and it will ruin any game that gets it for any of the newer consoles.

That guy from gameshark (ok, is this fact??) - he's asking a USER to test the codes don't work online? If just one does.. then bye bye to no cheating.

It sounds kinda bogus..

There's no way that a GameShark or a CodeBreaker cheat device can be made illegal as the legal precedent was made way back in the 80s (Nintendo V. Galoob) over the Game Genie. Nintendo lost each time they sued, and justifiably so as Galoob proved that game enhancers do not cause any physical, long-term, harm to a system or the games. Nintendo tried to play the "license" card and the courts overruled that by simple that there is no provision in the lawbooks stopping a company from a product that will operate on another system, regardles if the company is licensed or not (which paved the way for Atari to release a half-dozen Sega Master System games for the NES under their "Tengen" lable). The courts even went so far as to say that even if Nintendo went so far as to revoking a warranty on the basis of these devices, it would get them in hot water with the BBB over Consumer Protection Law violations since the burden of proof that a customer used a cheat device would fall on Nintendo's shoulders and Nintendo knew they couldn't prove that.

Cheat devices are here to stay, and in some ways, they do have a purpose. However, like with anything in life, some people use gadgets for ridiculous purposes. So, of course you'll have some idiots that will use them for the purpose of cheating online. But America is a country of free enterprize and the idea of banning or making cheat devices illegal makes about as much sense as make cars illegal due to the drunk drivers.

Back in the 80's the DMCA didn't exist. Yes, the pain in the ass, badly written, overly restricting DMCA may help us. According to the DMCA, what the GameShark does, by altering the code of the game, could be deemed illegal.

I thought all the gameshark did was change memory values or limit a program's ability to update values in memory. I wonder if this would still let the DMCA be valid.

Either way, how is a game coming out in this day and age where your system is the only one that knows "your" values. It wouldn't be that difficult for all the systems in a p2p game to store the value for each person and do simultaneous calcs on values, and desync a certain person whose values keep coming up wrong. (like with starcraft, for example)

yes there is at least one console game (single player) that gameshark could not hack because of key value protection.. any change in "number of lives" or "ammo" etc would break the checksums and I suppose the effort to decompile the whole game to find out where the checksum routines were hidden was not worth it..

with client server similar stuff could be woven into the server side (and client side) to head off memory modification devices.

Since xbox now has such a thriving hacking community, with modchips allowing people to completely turn their xbox into a PC, with all the decompilation access that affords, but still play all the games (ripped etc), my prediction is that xbox live is going to have a small, but very persistent section of online cheaters that will ruin any kind of national competition or tournament played from home.

I jsut bough the PS2 network adapter last week and jumped on SOCOM to see what it was like online. To say the least, there are a few odd things that have been noticed by myself and other players...

1) How can one player on the other team get all the kills?

2) How is it that you can unload your gun in the prone position and not kill the other player, but they can run and hop around and get you with a headshot?

3) I'm not sure about this one -> Some people have claimed to see players that "roll" from side to side making them an extremely hard target to shoot.

This is what I have seen/heard/experienced in my first week of playing SOCOM.

1) good players can easily get all the kills .. you can switch view when dead and watch them do it.

2) switch to 3-shot burst, full auto has remarkably less accuracy. But if another player is lagged out, sometimes they will appear from nowhere and kill you.

3) never saw any rolling .. you can lean though.

I think they call it 'peeking' in the manual. Just hit left or right on the directional pad to do this.

I think that there will eventually be cheats for the systems when items like the harddrives comes out for the PS2. Actually if you think about it when SOCOM boots up it loads data from your memory card. So if someone is really persistent they could load a script up in their memory card and it would work 24:7. Im no game hacking genious but it just makes sense to somehow use the "sharkport" to put your SOCOM saved file onto your computer and add a script to it then re port it back to the memory card and go from there. Then everytime you load up it would load it as well.

Another thing the only people that want to chaet are the little kids and teenagers. Cant remember how many times ive been on the SOCOM servers and you got that little kid asking how to walk threw the walls and cheat. Thats why i like my BBR boys cause ive never played that game wanting to cheat. It would get so boring so fast. When you die it makes you use your brain to out smart the opposition next time. If you had invincibilty on what would be the friggin point? Stealth just went out the door!

no, it just loads game settings.
game settings are not code. All the savvy people in the world could not put anything on the card that would be actually executed as code.
