Approved Comcast Modems Modem List

I just wanted to add a list of current Comcast modems, it took me a while to find
it. So I thought I would start a new one and try to make it easier for people
to find it.

It was originally posted here

And was posted by Teriwyn
Who I would like to thank for this fine list. THANKS A LOT Teriwyn

Its about time internal cable modems came out. I've heard about them for years when the DOCSIS spec was finalized, but they never appeared until now.

There has always been internal modems, just none that comcast wanted to use.

they may be a nightmare to work with though.

imagine, right now if lightnign hits yer cable line, it'll just blow out your modem.

imagine if the modem is in your pc!

Re: Approved Comcast Modems Modem List

Phone modems get fried on a regular basis since people forget to run the line thru a surge protector. Besides the modem, I haven't seen any major damage done to a PC unless it was a surge directly from the mains into the power supply. As for configuring, it can't be any harder then setting up a PCI NIC. Then again if you don't have Windows you could have a problem. If the company isn't willing to release documentation for the hardware, you might be waiting a long time for a driver.

You mean you don't have a surge suppressor on your cable line??? You should.

Re: Approved Comcast Modems Modem List

I have found NONE that don't introduce any sort of noice ingress or signal loss. My modem already has one H of a time staying connected. All I need is another few dB of loss. What kind of miracle suppressor (brand, model) do you use?

I decided there should be a place on the web where we have a listing of the approved Comcast cable modems. Since Comcast refuses to do it, I decided to take matters into my own hands. You can find the listing here.

I will try to keep you updated when that list changes, mbernste. I'll probably just dredge up this topic when doing so.. but if you want, I can shoot you a PM for you to update your page, as well. Just let me know.

Whatever is easiest for you. I put a mail link on the listing page for any updates, so you can do it that way as well. Maybe we can post it in a separate posting and make it "sticky."

Any chance of adding some additional columns? One to indicate whether or not each modem has user-accessible diagnostics/logging. Another column to indicate whether it has separate send/receive lights.

To start things off, the Toshiba PCX1100U (my modem, sigh) has neither.

"To start things off, the Toshiba PCX1100U (my modem, sigh) has neither"

The PCX1100 has SNMP capability (user-accessible)....unfortunately Comcast disable it via the Config file

It has an IP address of 192.168.100.1 (you have to manually set your IP address to something in the same subnet) and you will have to connect directly to the Modem (without a Firewall box). You can disconnect the RF feed on the Cable modem, Power it off/on and then SNMP to it, but when you reconnect the RF, bye bye SNMP access

Unfortunately the data is useless without the Connection to Comcast

Graham

If someone can give me a complete list as to which ones do have a diagnostics page, I'll happily update the list on my web site.

Re: Approved Comcast Modems Modem List

I know its not a complete list, but go to www.neotechcc.org

they list the stuff there :P

@turbolink.net

The cisco UBR904 is on the list (as is the UBR905 and UBR925), but absent is the UBR924. Is this simply an oversight, or does anybody think that the UBR924 wouldn't work?

I found a great place to get one cheap and was just about to order one. I can't imagine that the UBR904 works but the UBR924 doesn't, unless there's some very specific problem (or they've decided to disallow it for some reason)...

I'd say get the modem as long as their is a return policy. The SB2100 is not listed yet I know for a fact comcast will provision it just fine.

Not sure if someone has asked this already, but I went to the motorola web page just looking for whatever there may be for "firmware". I noticed that my trusty SB4100 has been discontinued? What's that about? I am hopeful that Comcast has already "updated" my modems firmware, before the model became obsolete. Do you think this is anything to worry about? Do I need the state of the art already?

Re: Approved Comcast Modems Modem List

MY Toshiba pcx1100u works fine when it's hooked directly to the pc but I can't get to work throgh my linksys BEFSR41 V.2 Router. Linksys tech support says they have issues with this modem. If I want to use their Router I have to install a Hub between the moden and router.

Anybody else have this problem.

Tabasco Joe

@motorola.com
I didn't see anything on the WEB page about the 4100 being discontinued. Even if it was I wouldn't be worrying about firmware support going away. There are millions of them out there.

This location does list the 4100 as a discontinued model.

Re: Approved Comcast Modems Modem List

Interesting the internal page doesn't show it as discontinued but the factory says they don't build em any more. Thanks for the link.

I just received my new DOCSIS 2 modem from Comcast. No major problems but they told me that if any modems are not DOCSIS 2 compatible, they won't work after Sept 30. Is this possible? For instance, they say that no Linksys Modems are DOCSIS 2.0 compatible. Anybody have any info on this. Thanks.

Re: Approved Comcast Modems Modem List

No they mean DOCIS 2.0. Increased upload speeds, etc. I have conformed and reconfirmed this with COmcast Modem Upgrade dept. DOCSIS 2.0 to be implemented on Sept 30.

Um comcast isn't offering increased uploads or any docsis 2.0 features. As someone stated comcast is not even docsis 1.1 and 90% of the modems out there are NOT 2.0 compliant

They are only cutting service to NON docsis modems..don't spread info that is false thanks

OK, you have my attention. I own my SB4100, and I do not think it is DOCSIS 2 compliant. Does that mean I have a problem in a couple of weeks?

Yeah right. Comcast isn't even DOCSIS 1.1 yet. How are they gonna all of a sudden jump to 2.0? Show me an average cm customer who's actually seen a SB4220, let alone using one. FYI, none of the popular SurfBoards (4200, 4100) are DOCSIS 2.0 ready (go read their prod specs if you don't believe me). Unless Comcast wants to piss off a whole bunch of its customers who purchased their own modems, DOCSIS 2.0 is not gonna happen any time soon, certainly not by 9/30.

Geez, only the SB4220 implements DOCSIS 2.0's A-TDMA. Nowhere is DOCSIS2.0 mentioned in the same sentence with SB4200/4101/4100 on Motorola's pages. One'd think if those could be used for DOCSIS 2.0, it'd be plastered all over the place by now.

Re: Approved Comcast Modems Modem List

Good catch.

Yes, the 4220 does support A-TDMA as defined in DOCSIS 2.0. However, CableLabs has a very strict set of rules for how a company can use "2.0" in their literature. The 4220 is certainly capable of working as a 2.0 modem on cable plants that have a CMTS that is configured to use the A-TDMA flavor of 2.0.
