| reply to robhouston Re: SBC-Yahoo Dial! - ISDN ISP
Update: For those that may be interested, I have been using SBC Yahoo with ISDN for 10 days now and all is working fine. According to my account information I have used about 50 hours so far. I noticed that the longest connection they let me have is 6 hours, 55 minutes and 57 seconds. Very strange value but I noticed in my router log that they disconnected me after that exact amount of time several times. I don't usually hog up so much dialup resources (unless I really need it for some reason) but I wanted to test this service out so I left it up all day on the weekend checking email every 5 minutes. One time they disconnected me was while downloading a large service pack. So I know they will disconnect me after that amount of time even if I am using the line actively at the moment. But this is typical ISP behavior.
So far so good. I just have to make sure that the local telco (Verizon) isn't charging me some strange fee for dialing this number. The bill cycle isn't over until the 24th so I have some time to wait. Hopefully by the end of the month I'll have my decision made and will be keeping SBC Yahoo and canceling SI. By the way, I have still heard nothing from SI on our problems with the new local SI number and see nothing updated on their web site.
Will keep everybody posted. -- Ever consider ISDN? Read more info about ISDN at brawney.com |

I get disconnected at this same amount of time with SBC Yahoo.
I think SI is in financial trouble, they have been slow with their refund and each time I call they keep telling me "We'll credit you in a few days" I've been trying since the second week in August. I finally contested the charge with American Express. -- Hug a PITBULL Today!! |

| SBC Yahoo is working great for me too.
The only problem is that I can't log into their web site or set up my email. I don't plan to use the email account much, so that's no big deal. I'll probably call them and check into the website login problem, just so I can track my usage and what not. My account is obviously active, but when I try to login at their web site, it tells my login isn't right. |

You need to complete your registration to activate the Yahoo features, which includes e-mail.
You can either do this by installing the software on the CD that they sent you (or are sending you), or you can use the link several posts above in this thread from me to complete the registration.
Once this is complete, you can begin receiving your e-mail and use all of features of the service.

This is just a dial-up account, like any other. Except that it reliably works for dual channel 128kbps ISDN connections.

| I saw some reference to a type of phone call named DOV - Data Over Voice. With Verizon I have a flat rate fee of 9.1 cents per local call I make when it is a voice call. Data calls are free. I was worried that the SBC Yahoo! local access number was a DOV call, therefore I could be getting charged by Verizon for a voice call (9.1 cents) each time I dial that number.
I don't believe that is the case but I want to make sure before I abandon SI. Sounds like SI is in hard time though so it may be a good idea to abandon them regardless. |

I don't think you'll know if a particular local access number for SBC-Yahoo Dial! works with 128kbps ISDN until you try it. In my area, I have 2 local access numbers, and both are reliable for dual-channel ISDN connections. Since SBC-Yahoo offers a 30-day free trial, you really have nothing to lose. It's unlimited service, with no maximum number of hours per month. As identified several posts above though, it disconnects after about 7 hours of connection. However, a router will automatically re-dial and re-establish your ISDN connection.
If SBC-Yahoo doesn't meet your needs, there are other ISDN supporting ISP's, but most are more expensive.
Good luck,

| robhouston, I was wondering if you have dual channels going, you connect one channel to sbc yahoo then connect the other an hour or so later so when it gives you the boot after 7 hours will the connection stay alive and not go down? Or does it drop the entire account after 7 hours? |

Well, I'm not too sure about the answer to your question. I have my router set up to always connect both channels, so I almost never use only one channel. After 7 hours, SBC-Yahoo appears to disconnect both channels, then the router re-connects both channels, if necessary.
When connected with both channels, I can drop one channel to make a voice call, then when the voice call is completed, this channel will successfully re-connect to SBC-Yahoo.
I'm not sure if this answers your question.

| What he is saying is that if you were to connect the two channels at different times, the 7 hour time limit will expire on each channel at a different time. Only one channel will be disconnected, leaving the other channel up. I don't know if it works this way or not. I am thinking it may be possible because I "think" I saw something like this happen on my line once. But I'm not positive and I don't know which service (ISP) I was using. |

| reply to bbwithdrawls2 bbwithdrawls, if we have not welcomed you yet, welcome to the forum! As robhouston said, you probably won't be able to tell if your local SBC Yahoo numbers support ISDN other than just trying them. I have one local number for them and it does NOT say ISDN and it still works fine with ISDN. I don't think any of their numbers say ISDN, do they?
It is unlimited service. 24x7 if you want to use it that way. But they boot you off after 7 hours of use, but again as robhouston said your router can automatically connect if you need to. It stinks when it happens during a long download though. I was on the other day for a few hours then started a service pack download and ended up getting booted off later in the middle of the night during the SP download.
SBC Yahoo is free for the first month, as robhouston said - boy he beat me to all these answers so give it a shot cause you don't have much to lose.
I have some instructions posted on my web site (»www.brawney.com) for SBC Yahoo as well as my experiences with satellite and some other stuff. Feel free to visit and read. -- Ever consider ISDN? Read more info about ISDN at brawney.com |

| HMMMMM, thats interesting , sign up for a dialup acct and connect with isdn , i just wonder if this will work with some of the other provides that offer both dialup and broadband like msn ,btw they offer the first three months free, ( be worthy of a experiment if you can connect at isdn speeds thru dialup #"S) i think they are using the same dialup #'s and dont have different ones for isdn so thats how this is possible , they can tell the difference between dialup and isdn but have so many accts they really dont care , like looking for a needle in a haystack
anyone had any problems out of 3 coms products and internet connection sharing , i know i know it should dial on demand from the clients if its not connected but can the client terminate the call and hang up ????? or will it stay on until it drops the connection |

| Both SBC-Yahoo and MSN's 56k numbers work with ISDN. I should say that I obviously haven't checked all of them, but I had MSN for a day or two and it always connected via ISDN. Same with SBC-Yahoo.
I have the 3com 3c892. I have a metered ISDN line, so I can't just leave my connection on all the time. The good part of that is that I've never had a problem with the 7 hour disconnect policy. I have 2 computers (plus a PS2) connected to the 3com router. When one of the machines needs to send or receive outside of my network, the 3com establishes the connection. Other than a delay of a couple of seconds, it's transparent. You can configure the router to disconnect after X seconds of inactivity. Since my line is metered and SBC-Yahoo connects every time, I have that set to 30 seconds.
Adding the second channel doesn't always happen on the first try, but if the bandwidth threshold is reached (configured in the router), I usually have 2 channels within 10 seconds or so. |

| reply to bbwithdrawls2 I have the 3c892 and there is a nice little utility that you can load and you can make the router dial or disconnect just by clicking an icon in the task tray. It works great and also shows the status of each channel. A little bar shows black if the channel is not up at all, yellow if it is on a voice call, and green if it is on a data call. It also displays caller id info when the phone rings. Pretty nice little tool. |
