Long Weeks

It's just crazy around here with my parents and their cancer. My dad has small cell lung cancer and my mom has non small cell lung cancer. I manage the medical end of things. That means I go to all appts. and procedures. I don't always go to chemo infusions because my dad would prefer to rest than talk to me. I will go with Mom when she wants me to go.

We need to find a cure for cancer! I hope that everyone will support the Stand Up for Cancer telethon that will be aired on the major networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) on Sept. 5th in prime time. All monies goes towards research. We must kill the beast.

I will write more later...

What Cancer Cannot Do

What Cancer Cannot Do

Cancer is so limited...

It cannot cripple love
It cannot shatter hope
It cannot corrode faith
It cannot destroy peace
It cannot kill friendship
It cannot suppress memories
It cannot silence courage
It cannot invade the soul
It cannot steal eternal life
It cannot conquer the spirit.

I have read this many times but I don't know how the author is. It is sooo true!

My dad was officially diagnosed with small cell lung cancer - extensive disease on Tues., May 6, 2008. I will write more about everything later. Right now I am just trying to soak in my mom's health issues along with my dad's cancer diagnosis.

Cancer Sucks

I personally know four people who have been diagnosed with cancer since last summer. My dad more than likely has cancer. It sucks. We can waste billions of dollars in Iraq but we can't cure cancer. Our nation and world has its priorities fucking mixed up.

It's Great to be a Jayhawk!

DAMN DAMN My Kansas Jayhawks are having an awesome year in sports. First of all, the football team went 12 -1 and won the 2008 FedEx Orange Bowl 24 - 21! Secondly, the men's basketball team went 37 - 3 (a school record for the most wins), was Big XII co-champs and won the Big XII tourney. On April 7, 2008, the team won the NCAA BB Championship! I am sooo damn happy right now! ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK KU!

I am still using my KU avatar. I am going to use it thru the end of basketball season. Then I will change over to my organ donation awareness ribbon.

I am still out of work. I haven't really looked that hard for one. I need to tho. Problem: The job market is tight and I don't know what I want to do. I know that I would be a dependable worker. That's what supervisors have told me in the past.

I bought myself an iPod, a non 3G one... I know I shouldn't but I love music. I have over 1600 on it. It has taken me awhile to import CDs. The next thing will be to burn some CDs for myself.

Getting Serious about Photography

I got my Canon G9 back in Sept. It shipped much earlier than I thought. I have bought sooo many goodies for it. I am learning photography thru online (forums) and books and by simply using my camera. I am glad that I bought the camera.

Enjoying the Break

It's been nice not to have to work but I guess I better get back to reality. It's time to get serious about looking for work.

I spent the Labor Day weekend down at Truman Lake. I love it down there! We went to the races at the dirt track in Wheatland. Later this month, there is off-road racing and we are going. It should be a lot of fun!

I pre-ordered the Canon G9. It looks like a great digital camera. My Canon G6 has served me quite well. I can't wait to get the G9! Too bad I have to wait until mid October to get it.

Been a Few Months

Much has happened in the last few months.

My oldest sib will need a new kidney sometime in 2008. Another sib is going to donate a kidney. For right now, sib is stable with kidney function as of last month.

My job officially ended at the end of June. I got my final notice in late April. My department was one of the first to go. The next company that says that they are consolidating.. I am leaving before the end. It ended up being torture. I think that CR was not prepared. Oh well, not my problem! I am mot really looking too hard for a job right now. I am enjoying my three months worth of severance.

I spent a week at Truman Lake. The flooding at Truman Lake was unbelievable! The lake was up 24 feet over normal.

Been a Long Time

It's been over a year since I posted in this journal and seven months since I logged in to BBR. I took a long vacation from this site. I don't know if I will ever be back on any type of regular basis here or not.

Things are not good on either the homefront (a sib's pending kidney transplant with another sib donating one and a pending divorce with custody battle) and the workfront (pending office closure).

On the workfront, the company has decided to consolidate and take the jobs to Cedar Rapids, IA. Moving to CR is not an option, Give me my severance package. I don't know if I am going to look for another job or go back to school. I am still weighing the pros and cons of both. I know for sure.... I am going to try to avoid insurance companies and non-profits as my next employer.

FINALLY!

I have spent the last week doing a makeover on my bedroom. Did it ever need it!

The walls had not been painted in fifteen years since I first moved in here (I've been in and out of the room two times in the last fifteen years.). The walls went from antique white to accessible beige. It looks like a light taupe. The trim and doors are white.. eggshell, I believe. The paint job is awesome! My youngest brother's best friend does painting for a living. He did a fantastic job!

I had recently bought new bedding... comforter and sheets. The comforter is khaki, olive green, and plum. It looks really great!

I bought a very cool table lamp in French bronze with a unique lampshade.

I didn't change the furniture and carpet... That stuff is in good shape.

The country is out and eclectic is in.

Pictures soon.

Justice for Ann Harrison

I am all for the death penalty...

There's a case here in my area that has been ongoing for years and years. A 15 year old teenager, Ann Harrison, was kidnapped, raped and murdered in March 1989. Michael Taylor and Roderick Nunley were out joyriding in a stolen car one morning. They saw Ann at the end of her driveway waiting for the bus to pick her up for school. At first, they were only go to steal her purse. Taylor and Nunley dragged Ann into the car and took her to the home of one of the guys' mother's house where they raped her. Fearing that she would recognize them, they then stabbed Ann numerous times, killing her. Taylor and Nunley stuck her in the trunk of the stolen car and abandoned it a mile away. This happened in a span of 90 minutes on March 22, 1989. Ann's body was not discovered until the next night when a neighbor called police to report the abandoned car.

Taylor and Nunley confessed to kidnapping, raping, and murdering Ann. In 1991, a judge sentenced them to death. The death sentenced was overturned by an appeals court. In 1994, the death sentence was re-instated. Taylor and Nunley have had numerous appeals over the years.

Taylor was to have been executed on Wed., Feb. 1st. At the last moment the 8th circuit court granted a stay! Taylor and his lawyer are claiming that lethal injections are a painful way to die and that it is racist! Is not slashing someones throat and stabbing that person numerous times a painful way to die? That is what Taylor and Nunley did to Ann. Yes, racism prevails but not in this case. Taylor and Nunley made a choice to do criminal acts. They should pay with their lives.

I think that our justice system is PATHETIC. It takes way too long to put an inmate to death. Don't we do DNA tests on blood and other evidence taken from the crime scene? Taylor's semen was found on Ann Harrison's body. Nunley attacked and seriously injured a prison official last month. Timothy McVeigh decided to end his appeals. He was put to death within four years of his trial. Taylor and Nunley have been in prison for 15 YEARS.

I want Ann Harrison's killers dead. I don't want my tax dollars to feed and shelter them anymore. The more I think about it... Lethal injections would be WAY TOO EASY for these two. They should have their throats slashed and then allowed to slowly die like Ann.

Justice for Ann!

The Plight of People and Animals in the Gulf Coast

I am both a sucker for both people and animals. I have made donations to the local children's hospital here and to two national animal organizations.

It's been heartbreaking to watch both the human and animal suffering since August 29th.

It angers me that people, including pet owners, are saying that people should not worry about the animals. WTH? I am owned by a cat and a dog... I would NEVER leave my two furkids for anything. I would grab them and go. Most everything else can be replaced but you and your pet's life cannot be replaced!

Kudos to all the relief organizations both human and animal working in the areas devastated by the hurricane!

What a Week

I've been watching way too much coverage on the hurricane and its aftermath. I spend a lot of time trying to updates on the Internet. I feel soo bad for the people along the Gulf Coast of AL-MS-LA and those in NO and the surrounding areas. I contributed to the local children's hospital since it transferred 24 patients from the children's hospital in NO. I also feel for the pets who have been left behind. I am thinking about donating some money to the animal rescue groups that are working to save animals in the areas affected by the hurricane. I just haven't figured out which one. I am sick of people saying that pets are not worth the effort. OMG Those people are obviously not owned by pets.
