| A PVC is a private virtual circuit. It's what transports you from the DSLAM to the Internet via Sprint's ATM cloud.
I'm still online here in Seattle as of 1:30AM 9/19, although I'm posting this from my non-Sprint IP so I don't make it easier for them. Earthlink's mail server no longer recognizes my IP as one authorized to use their mail servers, though; no biggie, Sprint doesn't block port 25 so I'm just sending from my own mail server. So far, Chicago, Denver, Dallas and Los Angeles are gone... is anyone else still up? |

Finally they are pulling the plugs from everywhere, shutting down equipment (DSLAM, TNX, Routers, ... etc), soon I will hear the liquidation from Sprint on these used equipment.
Well, who would have thought that the stupid mistake from Exec. could make a lot of people's life in chaos, and burning investor's money to a toilet in 3 years. Cheers to those ID10T Exec. who still rules Sprint. God bless who already got laid off and people who will be laid off.
I hope Exec. of Corporate America take off their fancy sunglasses and really pay attention what they have done to their faithful employees. |

Unplugged my BizDsl modem yesterday and retired it. Went from Ion, to Bizdsl, now to AT&T Broadband. I feel like I am in a death spiral.
It is the end of an era. It has been a great ride while it lasted.
I am afraid I will never see bandwidth like that again anytime soon unless a new, cheaper tech comes along that people know how to sell.
If a big company like Sprint couldn't make it work, I don't know who could. RIP Spint DSL. |

I've still got connectivity in Seattle, but the connection is very very slow and problematic. I may look into seeing if I can resolve what the problem is, but probably not...I've given up on Sprint. |

I believe that it is changing in Seattle, Houston, DC, New York and possibly some other areas. I think some areas they were keeping, now they are not. Others they were getting rid off, but now are keeping. I'll see what else I can find out from some people who work there. |

| Still up and running in Seattle, and nary a peep from Sprint. The network seems to have held up remarkably well. The evening that Chicago and Los Angeles died, we had a minor service interruption, but beyond that everything has worked as normal. Additionally, Earthlink's SMTP server inexplicably began relaying mail for my IP again.
Meanwhile, we're paying for two DSL connections, plus a phone line. I don't trust Sprint though, and I trust Worldcom even less, so hopefully between the two one of them will keep working. |

Today I got my replacement to Sprint Biz DSL running. Rather, my replacements: ATTBI cable internet service and Cyberonic/ Worldcom DSL and a Nexland Pro800 Turbo dual WAN router.
Why two? I no longer trust any one provider to keep me from deep trouble just when I need the service the most.
On the Friday before Labor Day weekend, my Sprint line went down. Sprint took its time calling PacBell even though, based on experience, about 90% of my service disruptions have been line cuts by PacBell. This is in spite of my jumping up and down (as politely but as encouragingly as possible) on Friday afternoon. Sprint insisted on a Sprint truck roll to verify the obvious, so PacBell wasn't called until the Tuesday after Labor Day. I was out for exactly 96 hours -- because of a PacBell line cut. Oh, and I had a major client project over that weekend, which was delayed because of my need to switch to dialup for access. So I decided to minimize the chances of that happening very often again.
My Cyberonic DSL order was already going (1.5Mb down/ 768Kb up for $50/month no contract and 1 IP). PacBell proved true to form and screwed up the install on a line that had previously had PacBell as a DSL carrier (yes, I had successfully cancelled that a long time ago, for sure). I got that moved over to my fax line, which seems to be working just fine. Time from order to live was 45 days for 2 attempts; time from re-order on the new line to in-service only took 18 days.
Cyberonic achieves upload speeds that are as fast as my old ION and Sprint Biz DSL lines. The download however only achieves 1.3 Mb. The pings and hops to Boston are about the same as ION/Biz DSL.
Immediately after Labor Day, while waiting for the Sprint line to get re-lit, I ordered the cable internet service (because I am convinced that PacBell will continuously screw up any competing DSL provider and, at this time, I'll be &@^#'d if I'll give them more money directly). Time from order to line fully installed was 7 days, even though we did not have cable service already at my home. Ping times to my Boston office from LA are 20% lower than Cyberonic or Sprint with 7 fewer hops, upload speed is capped at 250Kb or about half of what my ION/ Sprint Biz DSL line achieved.
Monthly Cost:
$45 for cable service
$50 for DSL
$95 per month Total or about $25 per month less than the "ION Transition Customer Plan" $120 on Sprint Biz DSL, or $65 per month less than the full price with 2 year or until Sprint quits $159 plan.
Setup
$399 for Nexland dual WAN router
install costs for cable ($16) and DSL ($99).
HOPEFULLY this will be more reliable. So far it seems nearly as fast. Oddly, the VPN back to the office seems faster, possibly because of the lower ping times via ATTBI. |

Gone in Herndon, VA - even after I signed up with them and they said I wouldn't be shut off if my new install wasn't completed by the 16th. Switching to Verizon now. And writing a letter to the Better Business Bureau. I'd suggest all in similar situations do the same. More than one Sprint employee lied to me back in July and up through today telling me I wouldn't get shut off, and now my entire business is paying for it - dearly.

Still up in Seattle, but with a crippled connection. It's slow and appears very bursty and appears to be dropping packets, but I'm not investigating.
However, today I finally received a letter from Roberta Winger, Director Customer Care, that "Sprint is withdrawing the Sprint Business DSL service it currently offers in your area....As a result your Sprint Business DSL service will be discontinued as of October 31, 2002." Sprint also mentions a credit of $400 for my troubles (ha, if they only knew).
I wonder if I should pester them for a functioning service for the last month. Or call to terminate now to avoid another month's bill.
Perhaps the final irony is that I actually got two letters from Roberta Winger, for two separate accounts. Those of you following my saga with Sprint in this forum will know that ever since the early ION days, Sprint has, for some unknown reason, had two open accounts for my service (which is for just one line). This has caused numerous problems (like double billing, etc.) that I've lived with for 2 years now because I loved the ION speed. Perhaps the last laugh will be mine if Sprint does, indeed, credit me $400 for "each" account. |

| Like BigJoe, I got two letters in the mail from Sprint. One was the standard "we're shutting the service off, and giving you $400 for the trouble" letter. I'll probably send a nasty-gram to the FCC, because they're offering their new DSL product in the Seattle area... just at a higher price for lower speed. Seems to me that bailing out of their contracts because they'd rather charge a higher price ought to be illegal, but I doubt that'll go anywhere.
What really got my blood boiling was the second letter. It read, effectively, "Unless you tell us by TOMORROW that you don't want your e-mail and Web hosting account permanently terminated on SATURDAY, we're going to do that." Great PR move there, guys. If this is how they treat business customers, I wonder how they treat residential customers? Oh wait, I know--I had ION!
I already have the replacement for Sprint Business DSL. I ordered my Verizon Wireless phone on Monday; they called to confirm that my new phone shipped today. So there goes Sprint PCS. When I cancel that account, I will switch my home long distance from Sprint (to avoid the $5.95 monthly fee that will be imposed when I no longer have Sprint PCS), and I'll be completely done as a Sprint customer; all that's left will be to sell my stock.
I'll also be posting my experience to internal distribution lists at work, for anyone there who is considering doing business with Sprint to factor into their decision. |
