what is the order, by date, of all the kinds of cable modems that cogeco has rented to people? |

| I wonder what the motivation for this thread is, but here goes. I don't remember dates, but in order of appearence from first to last they are:
Samsung Com21 DOXport 111 Ericsson Com21 1110 RCA 225
Bearing in mind that they aren't all available in all areas and it's mainly a case of what we can get from each of these manufacturers. A new modem model that we introduce is left in the hands of Icon to test exhaustively before going out to a customers home.
If I'm wrong, hopefully one of my comrades will correct me. -- Of course I'm good in bed. I can sleep for days!!!! |

Samsung Inforanger SCM-110R
Samsung Inforanger SCM-100R
Erricson Piperider HM200c/HM201c (their main page for the Piperider seems to be down)
RCA DCM245R: Instruction Manual
Com21 DoxPort 1110

| reply to nevertheless I loved my Lancity modem... hated the Zenith's with a fiery passion...
The Lancity looked like it could survive direct impact by big nasty things... and its case was a fancy heatsink... when cogeco was still sorting out problems with the Samsung cable modem (which I'm still using), I truly missed my old Lancity...
The Zenith looked like it was a highschool electronics project that wasn't meant for a production environment... oh, and it sucked. -- Unemployed tech geek in Hamilton... |

| reply to linuxgeek$ I _HAD_ a Piperider... thing died on me in 3 months- replaced it with a Samsung Inforanger, been solid ever since. That Piperider used to get _HOT_... then it just stopped working completely. The Pipelock feature is nice for people who don't leave their internet on all the time, but for me, my router will do.
I doubt you'll get better pings with any of the different modems- that really doesn't come into play just based on the brand of the modem to be honest. Really the only difference is if the modem operates at a frequency that is better in your area- I'm sure a lot of trucks get rolled where they just replace the modem and it was a signal issue- replacing the modem changes the frequency it runs on so its a bit better, but it doesn't solve the main problem. I don't know about the Com21 modems, but I would stick with an Inforanger or an RCA modem if given the choice. Hey, if the Com21 works for ya, why knock it? -- Black Mage may be evil, but he sure does love that Canadian Forum |

| Replacing the modem doesn't change the frequency it operates on (unless it's a dual or triple upstream frequency node it may pick a different one but that's a different explanation), it's just sometimes certain modems may perform more reliably in certain areas than others, but obviously that is just hiding the real problem, which is an RF issue that needs to be corrected. |

| reply to linuxgeek$ Maybe that didn't come out the way I intended- thats what I meant though- some modems operate better than others in certain areas, and changing the type of modem may get you back online, but it won't fix the underlying problem (RF) -- Black Mage may be evil, but he sure does love that Canadian Forum |

| reply to linuxgeek$ The Com21's had horrible problems with losing the upstream in the Niagara region.
Around here Cogeco went from the Samsung Info rangers, to the Com21's, then to the Ericson PipeRiders, and now they are using the RCA DCM245.
I myself have a RCA245 and it's worked flawlessly since I got it. It has a similar feature to the 'pipelock', if you hit the power button the modem will goto a sleep type mode until you hit it again. It does not actually turn off, as soon as you hit the power button it syncs up within a second, not the normal 10 seconds or so it takes from a powercycle. |

| reply to linuxgeek$ I to have had problems with the com21 modem. I just replaced it last week with a RCA DCM245 and had no problems since. The com21 cable modem would keep cuutting my internet off after playing 10 mins in a online game. RCA DCM245's are the best cable modems out there so far IMO Also after I got the RCA DCM245 my pings to game servers went down by 50ms or more. |

| The Samsung links don't work, probably on account of some ingenious web design.
There is the Com21 111 modem that we use, and I've never come across a Toshiba modem, but who knows what next week holds
Useful info though. -- Of course I'm good in bed. I can sleep for days!!!! |
