| Computer ever so slow!
Hi to all from Canada. First of all I am very lucky to be able to write anything or even open up this great Forum! I have Win XP Prof. AMD Duron 800 . 256 Ram. ( I hope this helps!) The problem, over the last week the computer is going slower and slower. In other words if I click on a shortcut icon it might open up in a few seconds or 2 minutes or not at all! If I play a movie file (which is in the computer! the sound seems OK but the picture is jerky! If I restart.it might be OK for a while and then slow down or it will NOT restart and I shut the computer down for a while, turn it on and sometimes it is all ok again! I have watched the CPU usage: right now it keeps going from 0% to 3%! I will try and open a program, nothing happens (CD usage 0%) Suddenly the program opens (CD usage goes up to 100%) I hope this helps! Because of this send you answer to my Email as well because of the problem I had much trouble getting onto this forum. Outlook Express seems to be much faster! Thanks very much! normanhoward@shaw.ca |

| I would suspect some other application may be running in the background that is causing your slow down.
Go to the Start > Run type in msinfo32.exe > Software Environment > Running Tasks
This will show you all your running programs.
You may want to post a picture of your running programs so others can suggest which ones to disable. Others running WinXP will probably be better able to help you. I am running Win98. |

You will see the amount of temporary internet files, temp files...you have. If you haven't done this and have had a lot of time online you will be surprised how much crapola is in there. I added 512megs of ram to a system which was running slow and it still ran like molasses in the winter. When I emptied the temporary internet files, it went back to speed Hope this helps |

He is running XP, scanreg is not a function of XP, it uses system restore.
Could possibly be a virus as well causing this, head out to »housecall.antivirus.com/
Its a free online virus scanner, better to be safe than sorry. |

| reply to gotcha3 What Video Card are you using???? What drivers??? What AntiVirus Program are using??? Is it updated??? Have you considered doing a clean install of XP???? Do you have SP1 for XP??? Or do you have all the updates listed at Windows Update??? When you first noticed this problem had you downloaded any programs from the net to try out????? Did you load any new programs???
Could you go to Start+Run and Type in MSCONFIG, then go to Startup. Now get a sheet of Paper and a pen and write down everything listed, then when you post back here type in everything on that sheet of paper. Also go to Start+Settings+Control Panel. Once Control Panel loads double click the icon that says System. Click on Hardware then Device Manager. Write down everything that has a Red x or exclamation point(!) or question mark (?) beside it, and the post your findings here.
Also do the online AntiVirus Test just in case something is wrong with the one you have on the system, if you do have one on the system. Another thing you could do before you post your findings is go to Start+Run and type in CMD and the press enter. Type in "chkdsk c: /f" (without the ")and press enter, say yes to check C: on next boot. Then reboot your system. After chkdsk runs try defragging your hard drive. -- Just my 2 bits. |

| reply to gotcha3 I am using Win98, so I may not be explaining things exactly right for your XP system. What you listed in your last post looks more like System Information, not your running tasks/applications. Above is a picture of my Running Tasks which many load during Start-up. You want to get comfortable there aren't any unwanted tasks/applications running, which includes spyware, viruses, and/or trojans. Start > Run > msconfig >Startup will list everything that is loading during startup. Here are several different links that can help you understand your running tasks, start-up items, and whether you need them running. »www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pa···tm#Alpha »ww2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm »www.forrestandassociates.co.uk/p···ups.html »www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html |

| Easy way in XP is Cntrl Alt Del, and bring up taskmanager. Look at the CPU usage. Should be less than 5% if you are not doing something. If constantly higher, then something in background is taking all your cpu time. Look in processes running and see what is taking the cpu cycles. This should give you a hint what is going on. |

| reply to gotcha3 A one year old motherboard with a 5 year old bios? may not have anything to do with your cpu usage but I would definitely check for a bios upgrade.
What's the capacity of your hard drive? How much free space? Are you using a windows managed swap file or have you set a fixed size?
In some systems just having antivirus and firewall software running in the background is a significant slowdown, add to that the default services running in a standard Windows XP installation and 256MB of ram is gone like it wasn't even there. What that means then instead of your computer using physical memory (RAM) it is then forced to use virtual memory or your swap file...specifically, pagefile.sys. How big is that file? If your hard drive is nearing capacity and you've used up all your free ram then the pagefile.sys would have no room to grow as needed then your system will really crawl.
A good site for optimizing running windows services can be found at this url:
So empty your internet cache and cookies, run disk clean-up, uninstall unused programs, right click on your boot-drive in my computer, click properties and then on the tab > tools. Under Error-checking, click on the command button: Check Now... A dialogue box with "Check disk options" will open up, select both check boxes: [X] Automiatically fix file system erros [X] Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
then reboot. Allow check disk to run and do it's thing on startup. - - -
When Windows loads, go to control panel (make sure you are in classic view),double-click on the administrative tools icon, and then on the computer management icon. click Disk Defragmenter, and select c: or your boot drive, then click the Analyze command button down below. In maybe a minute or so it will report the level of fragmentation on your hard-drive and suggest defragmenting if it's needed.
Following the analysis results, you can report back here with what you find regarding the questions I've asked along with those of the other posters, then let your disk defrag...
I suggest doing that and taking a break, go to lunch, or a movie or something... Depending on the size of your hard-drive, level of fragmentation, amount of free space available for it to work and your cpu it could take a while to complete but is well worth it if that's something you've been neglecting.

Do you download software/shareware off the internet? If so, much of it is laden with spyware/adware/malware and the like that can run processes in the background without your knowledge, slow down your system...download ads to serve up to you and transmit info about your surfing habits back to their maker. Each and every process takes up cpu&memory resources not to mention any bandwidth they may be piggybacking onto in the meantime.
Run Ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy, download if you don't already have, install, check for latest updates then scan your system.

New Dot is spyware, so I suggest following the instructions in my following post on removal, THEN running ad-aware and spybot search & destroy to remove other malware that has probably been installed as well but is less obvious. [text was edited by author 2002-09-21 18:47:42] |

| reply to gotcha3 Hold-on on that spyware check, just looked up the details on NewDotNet and you don't want to remove it in the wrong way....
A very large range of software installs New.Net, in particular file-sharing applications (at the time of writing at least KaZaA, iMesh and BearShare). -----------------
Manual removal A botched manual removal can result in you losing your network connection. Be careful.
First you must deregister the Winsock2 Layered Service Provider installed by NewDotNet. This can't easily be done with a command, but LSPFix gives you a nice interface to it. You should remove the two NewDotNet entries only.
Next, load regedit and open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID. Delete the keys 4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E and DD521A1D-1F98-11D4-9676-00E018981B9E. For older variants the key will be DD770A75-CE18-11D5-98D8-00E018981B9E instead.
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Delete the new.net value. Open HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects and remove the 4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E key. You can also delete the new.net entry in HKLM\Software and the tldctl2 classes in HKCR to clean up if you wish.
Reset the computer and you should be able to delete the NewDotNet folder (new variant) or the newdotnet DLL in the Windows directory (old variant).

Foistware: New Net, Inc. FirstLook Search Portal
»www.cexx.org/firstlook.htm
Removal procedure: When the Firstlook code is installed, a removal entry is placed in Windows' Add/Remove Programs dialogue. It appears as "Firstlook Portal". You can highlight this entry and select Add/Remove to remove it. We also recommend removing the New.net client from the same location, to prevent the installation of additional foistware programs in the future. |

Yes that is part of the list I posted. I believe Dpierc03 is already working on that part, and you should follow the advice given.
I know when I removed spyware with SpyBot my system got a 5-10% increase in performance, and I thought my system was clean. I would recommend using both Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search and Destroy, they both will find stuff the other doesn't and can safely remove it.
Please post your answers to the rest of the list of questions I posted. As I believe answering those questions may jog a few minds here and you should be up and running very soon. -- Just my 2 bits. |

Well I feel for you. Seems system restore is no replacement for scanregw. *SIGH*
I would defragment the drive(s) however.
I wouldn't worry about those suggestions of more ram and a bigger video card and all that mess either.
I installed XP on a Pent. 233MX with 64MB ram and a 4MB video card and it ran much better than ME on the same machine and everything was just fine.
