| 3com Sharkfin problems
Well, I just had my wonderful CyberSURFR Wave replaced with a modem 3com no longer supports, the 3Com Corp. External 2-Way Cable Modem (Sharkfin) and the blasted thing cuts out every once in awhile. All the lights are fine, but I can't ping/access the stupid thing. Granted, powercylcing solves the issue, but I do NOT want to powercycle every 45 minutes to 5 hours when the thing decides to take a lunch break.
I just had it installed yesterday, the tech said my line is fine, but tier one decided to send another tech to check my line for intermittant loss, which is a crock of balogna since the proprietary modem worked 100% of the time (except when att decided to replace them all :P).
Is there anythign *I* can check for? It has all these neat diagnostic thigs available, and I have no idea what would be a good range, etc. Any advice?
Makes me wonder if replacing my old modem was a good idea. bah. |

| I'm new to ATT Cable Modem. I got a leased SharkFin 2 weeks ago. It was at firmware level 1.03. A week later it got upgraded automatically to 1.17 so if you aren't at 1.17 give it a week and see of AT&T upgrades it for you. Two things I noticed with the upgrade were the modem's IP changed to 192.168.100.1 from the old 149.x.y.z and the third light from the bottom is now ON when the PC or Router is attached and goes out when data is being sent/received. Before the upgrade the same light was OFF most of the time and when data was being sent it would wink on. I have not experienced any modem hangs as you describe. The light is reversed now, with the new firmware. At first, I thought I was getting constant activity because the light was always on, then I realized it is just reversed now. |

| reply to tsu9 See thread on Another-Can't-Connect-with-Router issue. I traced my difficulty with home network down to the new 3COM tailfin router the ATT tech installed after a lightning strike took out my old trusty Motorola Surfboard cablemodem that had worked fine with a Linksys router setup. Tonight in exasperation I bought and installed a Toshiba PCX DOCSIS cable modem for the 3COM and all went perfectly. I think the 3COM modems are just not as good as the Motorola or Toshiba modems. |

| reply to tsu9 They initially tried installing that one and AT&T tech support told the tech don't bother and give me the RCA modem since that one doesn;t work on a proper frequenct for alot of the ATTBI in my area. -- BBR Distributed Computing Executive Member, Team StarFire Security & one of the "Team StarFire 5" |

| reply to tsu9 Excellent.
I was under the impression that this particular modem wasn't the brightest light on the market. When the tech comes to visit, I'll see if he has a different modem he can swap out for me.
I have no desire to fiddle with my power cords two to six times per day, if you know what I mean. |
