Hi folks,
I'm at a friends house cleaning her system. Had her download NOD32 and discovered she'd been infected with win32.kazaa.benjamin. All cleaned up now.
I installed ZAF and have been catching and deinstalling spyware (also using adware and spybot for this)
She has an AV suite I never heard of before from eAcceleration called eanthology.
The site is located here: »www.eanthology.net/
Does anyone have more info on them? The Stop Sign security gui keeps trying to access the internet.

Observed behavior - all components of the suite constantly attempt to make internet connections.
I've set ZAF to refuse access.
It did attempt to get me to download the software (again!) when I had it's 'Control Center' (that's not what it's called but I can't remember the title off hand) open. I wasn't doing anything, it's just that a window popped up exhorting me to download the stuff. There was no button to cancel. When I killed the window, another one popped up exhorting me to download another component.
In my opinion, it feels and acts like spyware. I'm not claiming it is. But given this behavior, I don't trust it.
I'll definitely be killing this suite of programs and removing them
One more point. It is complete crap as an AV anyway. It never recognized that the machine was infected with the win32.kazaa.benjamin virus.
Of course, YMMV - but I feel strong enough now about what I've seen to recommend that people avoid this software.
Thanks again folks! -- My Pictures.People who describe M$ software as 'mediocre' don't know the half of it.WinDoze Free 2003 |

| Let me hopefully put you at ease here about our product.
The poster in question complaining how eAcceleration software posted here usernames and passwords across the internet is now facing a lawsuit for slanderous comments that are completely false. She now has to provide the burden of proof in the case and she will lose. Simple as that.
There is no code in our software that can do that. We do have Scan results that can be sent to us directly for support issues, and the activation code is done while connected to the internet, but those are the limits to our software.
The reason our software tried to download itself is because you had clicked on a link, most likely one that resembled a stop sign in origin, and had the text "Scan Now" or something to that effect.
That will prompt the download of our trial version and start a light scan. Here is basically what our Stop-Sign Personal Alarm service entails:
We offer our Stop-Sign Personal Alarm Service to customers who wonder if they are infected. The trial version scans and will report if there are any threats on that customer's machine. Stop-Sign is not just an anti-virus product. It can detect and remove possible spyware, block pop-ups, and soon we will be adding a Spam blocker and a firewall. We have experimented with letting people try the full version of the software. We found that people were using our service to get their systems cleaned with no intention of ever paying us. So in essence we have the trial version:
* The trial version of the virus scanner is meant to give prospective customers a look at the functionality and interface of the software. It will perform only a light scan of your system and is unable to "cure" any viruses it may find.
An example would be the same kind of transaction that you would have if you brought your car into the repair shop and asked them to try and figure out what was making it run poorly. When you got the diagnostic report, you wouldn't then expect the repairman to fix your car for free simply because he was the one who pointed out what the problems were.
Unfortunately, during the 90's one of the big perks for going online was that many companies were giving everything away for free. Those companies went away for obvious reasons; you can't generate revenue by giving your products away for free.
We charge a fair price for our service and we offer unlimited support to our subscribers. We will spend as much time as it takes with a badly infected customer to get their system virus-free. We have solved cases were the customer had over 3000 infected files, many of which could not be removed in an automated fashion. Our technicians will coach them through the removal process even if it takes hours. We are committed to helping our customers get their systems clean.
Let us now address the Win32.Kazaa.Benjamin virus you may have been infected with. Our scanner engine does detect benjamin virus modules, but you had only the trial version, not the full version. Huge difference in our software detection abilities.
I hope that this may clear up any questions you may have had concerning our software. |

Welcome to DSL reports.
Sorry, have to comment...
I have a bad feeling about this software even though I have not tried or heard of it and frankly do not care to. One correction I would like to make is that the burden of proof is most likely going to be on the person or company that initiated the suit.
I suspect it is a SLAP suit that the defendant can not afford to defend him or herself against.
Reason I suspect that is where here »Virus/Trojan Help Needed you say.
"When the full version of scanner (available only by subscribing to eanthology) detects a virus, it will cure or eliminate it if possible, or quarantine it, thus preventing the virus from causing your computer any further harm. If it can do nothing else, the Stop-Sign scanner will alert you to the possiblity of a virus or threat. In addition to alerting you, if your computer is connected to the internet when the scan is run, Stop-Sign will automatically send the results of the scan to eanthology Customer Support Team. We are notified of the results of the scan and can respond immediately with the correct action if any is needed."
It must be sending some information out over the internet and if the person you or the company filed a lawsuit against thinks it is their name and password that is enough to get the case dismissed if proven. Admittedly I am unaware of all the facts as I am just going by your words and my imagination.
Lets see what you apparently said in another thread. »Virus/Trojan Help Needed
"I had a couple viruses and they cleaned my system up pretty good. Although I had to ask for help a couple times, they came through in helping me remove gator, and some trojans I had."
Huh???
Die spammer die!
We will see!

| reply to guycad$ I see that link does pop-up and start the download process. Next question:
How did you arrive at that link? Was it by clicking through, or was it provided for you somewhere?
I am trying to track it down here right now, and for some reason (either I am too tired from the long day, or something else entirely) cannot seem to track the logical steps to find the steps needed. |

Aren't the links you keep posting the download links on the site? When you click on the download link it should give you a pop up, what's surprising about that?

| reply to guycad$ Aren't the links you keep posting the download links on the site? -------------- Yes it was...it is normal then ,in your opinion, to get a page to download or just the automatic download at a site like that.
I expected a page that would then give me info about the download and some other particlars.
If it was labeled "download now" that would be different.
In reviewing every page on that site..before I did that...not enough information had been given for me to make a determination.
Further..the T and C and every other page does not give the potential user...trail basis or otherwise..enough infromation as to what he/she is really getting into..it is all marketing talk...no meat or substance.
They have no idea what they are getting into.
Quantic is doing a very good job of that here today..but those are the things that should all be there..in black and white..with no hype.
That is a big turn off...I think it is a great way to make $ but as you see..even with the ad popups people have been getting..even some that have signed up for it..still do not know what it is all about.
I think that is why he is here and I think the way they have start out in their campaign has turn off many people.

After some more thought and research, I came up with how you got that link.
Here is the link in its entirety:
ht tp://www.stop-sign.com/?pg=eanthology_legal_tc%26eanthology_legal_ua&ver=online&clk=1
Subtract the "26eanthology_legal_ua&ver=online&clk=1" and you get the same page without the pop-up.
Once there just put your mouse cursor over the "Scan Now" button and watch the url that is displayed at the bottom of your browser. It should match the 1st link given.
This is why it eluded me for so long, as there was no logical progression to get that link just by clicking all the other links contained there-in IF you never clicked the "Scan Now" button.
Now I am going home. Good night. |

Well, what you expect is not the issue here. The link says: "Download Stop Sign", then you post the link and claiming the site is throwing a pop up at you???
Whether you like or dislike the software is beside the point. Whether I like or dislike the software is beside the point too. Posting links like that and confusing the heck out of people and someone who's here to answer valid questions, is something that I find strange at best and unacceptable at worst. said by Name Game : WCB..do you understand how they operate???
That's beside the point too. If you dislike the software and how they operate, that's fine. In fact I don't like a thing or two about it either but that does not justify what you are trying to do which is confusing the issue. If you have problems with the software and the company's practices, provide facts and not made up links.
This forum is here to provide all (and that includes software manufacturers) with an objective view and a chance to present and defend themselves and you are not helping. -- You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long. |

Hi quantic, Welcome to the Security forum.
I haven't personally used your software, but based on what I have read, I believe your company has made a few mistakes and you probably will be paying for it for some time to come. What you will do in the future will really determine how far your software can go and how popular it will become.
A few suggestions and observations: When I click on a link that says: "Scan now!", I expect to have an online scan and not a download of your product. There are sites that provide good online scans and we keep sending members who have problems to those sites. It's mostly understood among people that "scan now" should really mean "Scan now".
Your trial software does a limited scan and does nothing to remove the virus. If I want to send a member with virus problems to a site, I'd rather sending them to a site that can solve their problems as opposed to a site that tells them what they already know which is they are infected. Having a trial version that expires in let's say 30 days or can not be updated with new definition files after a set period of time is a far more effective way of promoting your AV.
As a rule any software that sends anything to the manufacturer without at least giving the user full control over it, is frowned upon among most security conscious users. You need to look into that feature further. The idea of your software being a spyware will never ever go away unless that feature is taken care of and it really doesn't matter if there's any truth to that or not.
Pushing the software into people's throats has always backfired and it always will. Providing accurate and detailed information about your software on the site and allowing the users to make informed decisions will go a long way. People will be far more receptive if they are on the driver's seat.
Good luck. -- You can catch the Devil, but you can't hold him long. |
