 | Zone Alarm TrueVector - Help Wanted to upgrade my ZoneAlarm Free. Did not deactivate TrueVector. When tried to install upgrade file, got message saying that TrueVector must be disabled. Then, computer crashed. When I rebooted, ZoneAlarm dissappeared from desktop, from programs list (i.e., Start button), and from tray. In Safe Mode (using Windows 98), I tried deleting the 2 files ZoneAlarm says on their website to delete (IAMDB.RDB and the LDB file for my computer), but they reappeared when I rebooted. Now, I don't have ZoneAlarm, but Internet connection is sporadic - as if something is blocking connection. How do I uninstall ZoneAlarm? Or at least TrueVector? Any suggestions? |

sigPremium join:2001-05-05 | Check the manual uninstall instructions from the ZL Help section/support site. Presumably the "uninstall" routine is unavailable to you, yes? Still, the instructions should enumerate files and registry keys to look for and delete. Dig 'em out and delete them. Use a reg cleaner to check and make sure no ZA bits or keys are left.
Then see how it goes. Yes, an improper uninstall, a crash, something that corrupts or disturbs TrueVector can result in problems getting or maintaining an internet connection. ZA has a failsafe sort of gizmo: if something tries to shut down or uninstall ZA in any way but the manner documented in the manual, ZA will interpret it as an attack (like a Trojan might disable a firewall to take over a machine). So ZA responds by shutting off all internet connectivity. Trouble is, if you have a crash or a ZA burp and were not attacked by a Trojan you're still off the net. |

If that doesn't work you can try =
Uncheck load at startup and reboot
Run c:\program files\Zone Labs\Zonealarm\zauninst.exe
Reboot
Delete all files in the "Internet Logs" folder
If you're sure you can find your license key, you can also delete the hidden file C:\windows\system\zllictbl.dat
Run your favorite 2 or 3 registry cleaners and make sure that registry key is gone when you're done.
Boot to the dos command line and run "scanreg /fix /opt" If you've never done this before, it may take about 20 minutes.
Reboot
There should be no trace of any version of za on your system at this point.
Re-install
This may not be exactly the procedure ZoneLabs offers, but I hope it covers all the bases and goes an extra step or two beyond reasonable.
Or
1. save file : zap_clean.txt attached w/this msg to an empty folder eg. C:\Tem1 and rename it to zap_clean.reg Hit F5 on keyboard then rightclick this *.reg file choose/leftclick Merge from menu and ok out of any question/dialog window.
2. Try deleting C:_Restore directory which in Windows ME may not be allowing you to delete certain files of ZAP. You need to boot with a Windows 98SE bootdisk to A;\ prompt and type del C:\_restore or C:~restore If you succeed in this you can then delete C:\windows\Internet logs folder & then do clean install of ZAP after rebooting twice(2 times).
This may work aslo =
Note: Be sure to install from an account with Administrative privileges, if your OS supports them.
Please do the following. If any of the steps below do not apply to you, or you are unable to perform the function listed, please continue to the next step.
1. Open the ZoneAlarm Pro program, go to the OVERVIEW >> PREFERENCES tab, and make sure the "Load ZoneAlarm Pro At Startup" box is UNchecked.
2. REBOOT.
3. You should now have no ZoneAlarm Pro processes running on your system.
4. Now run Start, Programs, Zone Labs, and Uninstall. Click "Yes" at the prompt for the security check from the Zone Labs security engine (You MUST allow this service to shut down in order to remove files).
WARNING - Do NOT run the ZoneAlarm Uninstall program while in Safe Mode. The program may not be able to make the proper registry changes in Safe Mode, thus generating errors after a reboot.
5. REBOOT.
6. To make sure that you can see ALL the ZoneAlarm Pro system files, if they are still on your computer:
a. Right-click on My Computer, then left-click on Explore. When the Windows Explorer panel appears: - In Windows 95,98,and NT: Click View>Options (in Windows 98, this will be called "Folder Options"). Click the "View" tab, then click the "Show all files" radio button. In Windows ME, 2000, and XP: Click Tools>Folder Options. Click the "View" tab, then click the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button. b. Click OK.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Making modifications to system files may disable crucial functions of your Windows operating system. We strongly suggest re-enabling the "Hide files and folders" feature once all ZoneAlarm Pro files have been removed.
7. Click on Start, then Search or Find, and select Files. Make sure that the location box is set to search your local hard drive (usually C:) or All Local Drives.
Type the following exactly - including any spaces. Delete any FOLDERS found:
zonelabs zone labs Internet logs
Note: Your alerts log -- ZALogs.txt will be stored in the Internet Logs Folder. If for any reason you wish to save your alerts log, simply copy this file to another safe location on your hard drive.
Type the following exactly - delete any of the following files found in C:\Windows, C:\WINNT, or any subfolder below those, or in any \Temp folders ONLY:
vsdata.dll vsdata95.vxd vsdatant.vxd vsmonapi.dll vsnetutils.dll vspubapi.dll vsutil.dll (NOTE: Do NOT remove this file from any McAfee folders) zllictbl.dat zlparser.dll
Type the following exactly - delete any files found in any folder with "Programs" in the pathname):
zapro zonealarm zonealarm pro
8. Make sure your Recycle Bin is empty (right-click and select Empty).
9. REBOOT
Now you should be able to install the latest version. Double-click on the file you downloaded. The installation program will guide you through the setup process. (Note that all registration fields require at least 1 character, even if only a space for company, and "@" for email address). Be sure NOT TO choose "Upgrade", as this can cause further difficulties if the database is corrupt.
If your still having problems after trying the online help method. Or any of the methods above. Please repost & I'll forward this thread url to support to have them take a look. -- *IGGYZ* *TeamZ*Member InsightBB 3000/128kpbs |

sigPremium join:2001-05-05 | Iggy: he may or may not be able to run the regular uninstall routine since it appears that bits of ZA may actually be missing. Certainly from the usual start menu and the systray according to the poster. (We had a similar circumstance reported here last week, I think.)
I think I should have directed him to find what bits were left of ZA and where, using the manual uninstall guidelines to track them down. If the uninstall file is still available (the "unwise?" file, I don't have ZA where I'm at) he could click on that and then follow the std uninstall routine. Or if anything is showing in add/remove programs.
Since we haven't heard from him, presumably he's either ok or in it's last dying gasp, true vector is keeping him off the net. |

sigPremium join:2001-05-05 | reply to Howard7 Howard7: That sounds like a pain. Have you tried the just "refreshing the True Vector database" routine? It's in the help files. It basically clears out the program permissions, etc, and sometimes cures up True Vector related issues without going through the uninstall/reinstall process. |

From The ZA help files =
Step 1: Reinstall and then uninstall ZoneAlarm
Note When installing or uninstalling ZoneAlarm on Windows NT/2000/XP systems, always use an account with administrator rights. This can be and administrator account, or a user account that is in the administrator group. For more information, see Windows help.
Reinstall ZoneAlarm by running the installer you downloaded from the Zone Labs Web site. In the ZoneAlarm Control Center, go to the Preferences tab of the Overview panel. Clear the check box labeled Load ZoneAlarm at startup. Restart your computer. IMPORTANT: Make sure you are not connected to the Internet before proceeding to step 5. In the Windows Start menu, go to Programs | Zone Labs. Click Uninstall ZoneAlarm. Answer Yes to all dialogs during the uninstallation process. If you are still unable to connect after following the steps above, manually unininstall ZoneAlarm Pro. How?
Manually uninstalling ZoneAlarm If you are having persistent connection problems even after running the ZoneAlarm uninstaller, manually uninstall ZoneAlarm by following the steps below. Note that the steps differ depending on your operating system.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows 98/2K/XP
To manually uninstall ZoneAlarm from a Windows , 98, 2000, or XP system, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Start your computer in Safe Mode.
Enter Safe Mode with administrative account without networking. To learn how to start in Safe Mode refer to Windows help. Go to Start | Help, click the Search tab, then type 'Safe Mode' in the search box and click List Topics.
Important Do not start ZA/ZAP, or run the uninstaller, while in Safe Mode.
Step 2: Remove VSDATA registry entry (Windows 98/ME only--not required for NT/2K/XP)
Important Deleting registry entries incorrectly may require reinstalling your operating system. Always make a backup copy of the registry before editing. Perform the steps below with extreme care, or seek help from someone familiar with registry editing. For further information about registry editing, see Windows help.
In the Windows Start menu, click Run... In the Open box, type regedit. In the Registry Editor window, use the left-hand navigation to locate the following key: W95/98/Me/XP HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VSDATA95. In the right pane of the window, right-click the key, then choose Delete from the popup menu. Choose File | Exit to finish. Note After editing the registry in safe mode, you may get a VXD error when restarting your computer. This means Windows did not allow editing of the registry in Safe Mode. If this occurs, press Enter. Restart your computer in normal (not Safe) mode, then repeat Step 2.
Step 3: Delete selected files
Using the Windows search function, locate and delete the files VSDATA95 and/or VSDATANT. If you want to keep a record of previous alerts, copy the ZALog files from the Internet Logs folder to a safe location). Using the Windows search function, locate and delete the Internet Logs folder. Step 4: Cleanup
Empty your Recycle Bin. Restart your computer. Step 5: Complete Uninstallation
At this point, your Internet connection should function normally. To complete the manual uninstall, you will follow steps posted on the ZoneAlarm Web site.
Go to »www.zonelabs.com/store/content/s···lFAQ.jsp. Under How do I unininstall, then reinstall ZoneAlarm, click the link for your operating system. Under Uninstallation step 1, begin with substep A, then follow all the remaining uninstallation steps.

 | I have been directed to this thread because I am trying to uninstall/re-install.
I can't make True Vector shut down. I can't uncheck the Load at Startup box. I tried booting into Safe Mode and deleting the two files idnetified, but ZAP still started up on re-boot. I have tried using msconfig to remove ZAP from startup menu, but it doesn't work.
Thanks for your help. |

| reply to brumby6 It may be too late now after everything you have done but there is an all users start-up which ZA adds an entry to during installation and when installation is not completed normally it leaves it there. Search your drive for "all users" use the quotes. See if there is an entry for ZA there. -- Dog and Butterfly |
|

| the uninstall feature of za is usually a bad place to start anyway. most of the time users will experience the vsdata95.vxd problem during bootup which can start alarm bells ringing in their heads.
if you have gone down this route then try hitting f8 during bootup for bootup options and chose step by step confirmation.
hit yes ('y') for all the questions except for vsdata95.vxd and you should be in windows.
then go for a manual search of your drives (using find) for all instances of 'zone', 'za', 'alarm' etc being extremely careful to read what they are related to i.e. dont delete a 'zone' file which relates to time or msn gaming zone!
click start>run and type in regedit and look for vsdata95, za, zone, alarm etc again deleting the key or string with great care. remember the registry is just a little bit important!!
reboot and you should be ok.
now for people who havent already used the uninstall feature you should opt for the manual approach described in above and all should be well.
remember to shutdown za first!
if i have been a bit vague then please correct me or post a quick question
good luck [text was edited by author 2002-11-03 12:53:25] |

| reply to TheWiseGuy I did find the ZAP entry in an all users folder. It was the only entry. Do I delete it?
Edited to add: I did go ahead and delete it - and Woo-Hoo! The box is unchecked!!
