Anyone using pgp?

I'm new to this forum so please forgive my form if its not up to par That said

anyone use pgp? I've just downloaded it and found a good tutorial but it left me with a few questions.

will all my email be encrypted?(ie: can I still send email to users that don't have my key?)

Generally, it depends upon what email client you are using and what plug-in to support PGP. The ones I've seen generally have two ways of accomplishing encrypting of outgoing email. 1. Extra button options in your email client that specifically says something like "Encrypt and Send" - i.e. like the real Send button, except meaning "send this message now, but encrypt it before you send it." 2. A kind of permanent setting that says something like "Encrypt Outgoing Messages" - meaning, attempt to encrypt every message I send when I hit the normal send button.

With this second option, it looks in your PGP key ring to find the public key of the person/people it is sending to, so that it can encrypt the message properly. If no key is found, a message should pop up asking you about it.

Yes, you can still send non-encrypted emails, too.

-----BEGIN PGP $IGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Even if it doesn't hook directly, you can type the letter you wish to
in an editor window, encrypt or encrypt and sign it and then
cut and paste that portion (from begin PGP message to the last end
PGP message) into the letter. On the far end they can do the same in
reverse.

I use The Bat! and it integrates right into my e-mail.

The -----BEGIN PGP $IGNED MESSAGE----- won't appear in a posted message??? Even with text before it, even though it shows in preview and TT tags enclose everything?
For some reason, it is being filtered out. But the others are fine? The $ cured it, but why????

Yes. Just right click the little PGP lock in your system tray...

You'll see the options. Check under Current Window.

The PGPtray utility, at least the version I'm using, has the options shown in the screen shot above. If you copy or cut text into the clipboard, you can encrypt and/or sign it there, and then paste it into the same or a different program, such as an email message body window. atangel appears to have signed the text of his/her last post above and pasted it into the DSLR message posting window.

Its kind of an open ended signing and encryption utility for use when the application you're in doesn't have a PGP plugin or built in support for PGP.

You *can* do that, but you don't really need to. Whatever email client you
are using, simply type your email as usual in it's editor window, then
using the PGP tray icon in your system tray, right click, current window
and either sign or encrypt and sign (according to your needs). Then send
your email as usual.

I also use "The Bat!" which is an awesome email client by the way , but
I prefer not to use the PGP plugins. It is just as quick and often easier
to simply do as above and do all your signing/encrypting via the tray. You
can also assign hotkeys for these functions which makes it even quicker.

Not sure what you mean here. As you will see in my previous post, my PGP sig shows up fine in my post. Remember that once you have signed your message, you can't alter it or your sig will show as "Bad". What are the TT tags for? My HTML knowledge is very basic! You don't need them in any case so maybe that is why your sig wouldn't show up.

Re: Anyone using pgp?

For sure the signature is broken with $, but if you put the 'S' back it'll be fine... you can tamper with a message all you like, as long as you leave it as you found it, it'll check out.

Don't know why it didn't show. Tried it in a couple of places within the message.

<TT> and </TT> is called, I think teletype. Anything your type between those brackets is and rendered "as is," including special characters.

Do a Google search on "web of trust" to learn about the concept, originally developed by Phil Zimmermann (notice his key/sig in your PGPkeys), regarding having multiple signers confirming the authenticity of public keys. PGPkeys will link into the key authorities and pull down keys from various individuals to support the trusting of other keys that you've downloaded... etc.

Nothing is amiss... Those are the public keys that come with the install. Probably meant more as an example than useful. You need public keys to encrypt something to someone and they need the private key to decrypt it. In return, people need your public key to encrypt information to you, but only your private key will decrypt it (by the way, and this may be confusing at first, you can encrypt a message for more than one person. Don't forget to encrypt a message you write to yourself too... otherwise you will never be able to decrypt and read it!!!)

The docs are also some of the most extensive I've ever seen in a free product and worth reviewing.

Already answered by others, but if you don't want them cluttering up your key ring, you can delete them if you want. They are not essential and you will most likely never use any of them!

Sure!

Heck, I cant get that first line to show up either! Grrr...

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Im using PGP 6.58ckt8 and I love it! You can not only encrypt emails, but
also encrypt files by using PGPdisk - its very easy! You can download it at
»ftp://ftp.zedz.net/pub/crypto/incoming/ its free. You can use 256bit
symmetric and 16000bit asymmetric keys, so you wont be running out of bits
in security for the next few thousand years...

Also, for more info about PGP, I suggest your read either

The docs are really useful PC Dreams, but sending is as simple as cut and paste... from your keyring dialog (copy) to an open editor window (paste), to notepad or the export function from the menu. It looks like text. You can also export your key to a keyserver when anybody can look it up and get it. When you created your key it probably tried to upload it to one such key server. You can search google for "PGP Key server" and you'll get a list. Dropping at one eventually gets it to most if not all of them. They synch with each other.

Someone send you their public key and you can then import it. It will show up in your list as a public keyring (like all those others) and as a person you can send encrypted e-mail to.

Andrew

Didn't type fast enough.. a public key right over my head!! Wait is that your signature???... man.. who's after you!!
