| reply to toadleyb Re: Rutland, Vermont sloooow speeds
I live near Brattleboro, VT and also have Powerlink.
Just last week, I was enjoying normal speeds of 1.8-2.2Mbps. Then suddenly about 5 days or so ago, speeds sank to under 400Kbps.
Also, a friend just got Powerlink installed in the next town over and his modem doesn't even stay online for more than an hour a day tops before it goes offline. The tech who brought over the "Self-Install Kit" (big pathetic joke IMHO) was called back to the house the same day, tested the line and said it was weak. It came on by itself in one of those lucky magical happenings and he spent 10 minutes there browsing AOL news while my friend watched him in shock. He did NOTHING to improve the line speed and didn't bother to even try. My friend is middle aged and not too computer savvy and even he was appalled by this behavior.
Last night, my better half's cable connection in the other room kept dropping offline by itself. She called Tech Support and threw the phone quickly to me (I've been a PC Tech for 10+ years) when they mentioned drivers. The VERY RUDE and CONDESCENDING technician told me to update drivers. I asked him about the speed drop and he said that "the problem is fixed now" and that my area "is no longer affected by the problem." Here it is the end of the next day and still only 300-400Kbps on speed tests. The downloads start at 75K and drop to 15K or so. Real nice.
Dontcha love monopolies? Who else are we gonna get cable from? No one. There IS no one else but a bankrupt company full of half-witted, overly snobish tech's to turn to for support. Support? What a joke.
Just letting you folks up in Rutland know that you aren't alone. We get our service from Burlington, too.
