| Windows XP, new install..need old stuff
I had my XP go down due to a video problem and ended up installing fresh on a new drive. I have my old drive with the bad Windows still in my mach. It will not boot Windows in any way, but it is still readable. I would like to salvage my IE 6 favorates and my OE Express mail and address book. How might I do this since I can not boot Windows and run export? Thanks.

| Can the old drive be seen from the new drive?
If so you should be able to use the Import/Export Wizard in the File menu dropdown in IE and direct it to the files on the old Drive that you want to Import to the new IE.

OK..I know the IE fav's are under documents and settings\your name\favorites. Drag and drop them to the new HD folder with the same name. Now the other ones, I will have to suggest that you do a search on that drive by name or email address however it is stored. My other suggestions if you have problems getting the old drive to search, is that you can add an address and Express mail entry to your new HD and then do a search to find the directory in which the program stores your entry.

| Thanks steve1a..for adding to the part I didn't know because I don't use those programs. My reason for telling fredsimon about this option is that I have not been able to get the files and transfer wizard to work like I wanted it to, and I usually do better just using 'drag and drop'.

| I actually haven't tried the Wizard myself... but because of the possible confusion with exactly where in the user(s) files these belong the Import Wizard is probably a good thing.

I just checked...and the wizard cannot be used from (for) a backup drive..it only asked about the current "c" being the "old or New".

OK..I know the IE fav's are under documents and settings\your name\favorites. This is where they are...they do not have one particular extension in common. Usually they are IE HTML's or folder with HTML's in them...It depend on how you organized them when you put them in favorites. Just copy the entire directory to the same directory on the new HD as I said above.

It looks like you should be able to browse to another drive.. even one on a network worked for me.
So assume the old Drive is D you should be able to browse to:
D:/Documents and Settings/Your Name/Application Data/Microsoft/Addressbook
D:/Documents and Settings/Your Name/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook Express/Mail
D:/Documents and Settings/Your Name/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook Express/News
D:/Documents and Settings/Your Name/Favorites

To back up the registry in XP:
Open Regedit
Select My Computer
File->Export
Give the file a name
done.
Be wary that this will create a copy of your entire registry and can be quite large. The last time I did this I got a 48MB registry file.
