Re: Line/Modem Question

I would go to www.grc.com and use shields up and it checks your connection and your checks for open ports and stuff like that.

check for what is using your connection during that time.
could be a trojan, if you run a check and you come out clean the something else might be using the connection and using your computer resources causing it to slow down or freeze temp...

One of my points in the initial post was that this stuff going on is temporarily freezing my machine when it is going on.... any ideas on that issue please! It's driving me nuts, and it can be a very short trip for some of us...

Thanks there!!! I take it from reading those items, that all should be well, and I don't have any issues to deal with? Was begging to think I had some corruption in my W98 going on. I'd done a clean re-install a few weeks ago, and would dread the thoughts of doing it again.

I think your modem had its firmware updated as other users have had this issue with other providers. Check it out:

»3com Sharkfin problems
said by 3Com website:
The Data Rate LED (second from the top) now has a dual purpose: If the CPE is connected to the cable modem (CM) via Ethernet or USB, the LED will illuminate. When the CM is sending or receiving data the LED will blink. (1.16 and above)

Formerly the Data Rate LED would blink when the CM was sending or receiving data, and did not illuminate at other times.

Most likely ARP requests that are flooding the network. Usually due to code red and other worms/viruses constantly looking for machines to infect.

Run a packet sniffer and that's probably what you will see.

Well if its not affecting your speeds at all I wouldn't bother anymore with it, the modem might be acting up some who knows.

I've already checked that as initial trouble shoot item. The only thing running is "Explorer", and this IE browser window...... Even before opening the IE the activity is going on. Had shut down all processes that were running in background, even Antivirus.

Looks like your computer is doing alot of communication with the modem, I would check and see whats running in the background that sounds like thats the source.

Clean shut down & power off. No activity.

As soon as W98SE is starting and loaded it commences with the spooky status light.

If I disconnect the patch cable going to the NIC is ceases the activity.

Fire wall was shut down and removed as part of my own trouble shooting.

Try shutting down the computer and see if it stays on, do you have a firewall or anything? is there any programs running in the background?

Except that there is nothing running that is accessing the modem...

What also is freaking me on this one is that if it stops the polling it momentarily hangs my machine until it starts back to doing it. Thats how I first noted it. Have several times done the shut down/restart, power cycle modem, check connections on lines, etc....

Hey....... Halloween is on it's way isn't it! >

One for the Techies here......

I have a "3Com HomeConnect" cable modem. The "Data Rate" LED on the front of it is continuously blinking at a rapid rate. I still have connection, and speeds are no different than before. This has been going on for about 3 days now. I thought maybe there was an issue out in teh wilderness some place, but it is continuing.

CAn one of ya's point me in a general direction on this one?

Thanks!
