Except that there is nothing running that is accessing the modem...
What also is freaking me on this one is that if it stops the polling it momentarily hangs my machine until it starts back to doing it. Thats how I first noted it. Have several times done the shut down/restart, power cycle modem, check connections on lines, etc....

| Try shutting down the computer and see if it stays on, do you have a firewall or anything? is there any programs running in the background?

| Clean shut down & power off. No activity.
As soon as W98SE is starting and loaded it commences with the spooky status light.
If I disconnect the patch cable going to the NIC is ceases the activity.
Fire wall was shut down and removed as part of my own trouble shooting. |

North Tonawanda, NY | Looks like your computer is doing alot of communication with the modem, I would check and see whats running in the background that sounds like thats the source. |

| I've already checked that as initial trouble shoot item. The only thing running is "Explorer", and this IE browser window...... Even before opening the IE the activity is going on. Had shut down all processes that were running in background, even Antivirus. |
