MSN DSL Sharing w/linksys

Can you share a msn arescom 800 dsl modem connection with a linksys befsr41 router.
I called linksys they say no because the the modem is a router. But I thought I seen someone here do it. I can ping the net though the linksys. and i can ping the linksys and the modem. but that is it.

This is how I got the Linksys to work with MSN. Since the default ip address of the Linksys is the same as the Arescom 800 dsl modem , you have to change it on the Linksys. On the Linksys setup screen change the LAN IP Address to something like 192.168.1.50. Remember to get to the configuration screen again from your browser you will have to use this new ip address. For the WAN IP Address click on specify. You need to make these settings like those your PC was set to when directly connected to the modem. Since on my setup the Northpoint Tech specified these settings I would also. Set the WAN to Specify an IP address. Specify the ip address as 192.168.1.2. The gateway as 192.168.1.1 and the DNS as 216.230.97.30. These are my settings. Your DNS might be different. Disable PPPoE. Apply changes.

If you want to use DHCP to automatically assign ip address to your computers, be sure to enable DHCP. Set the starting IP address to be 100. Apply changes.

For your individual PCs you will need to set the properties for your network card tcp/ip.
If you have DHCP enabled on the Linksys select Obtain IP Address otherwise you can specify. I would start with 192.168.1.100.
WINS is disabled
Gateway is 192.168.1.50 (same ip as Linksys LAN)
DNS is 216.230.97.30 (or whatever yours was set to)

Restart your machine.

That should do it. Good Luck.

Umm.. I have read your post.. How can you "DISABLE PPPoE" on the NetDSL 800.

Hey, thanks to you all for your excellent advice. Thanks again for excellent input. Especially you Larrys. You're an ACE. Unfortunately, the heat is on.

I just read an interesting post on how to get connect several PCs to MSN with just using a switch. The link is

»msn/ sohoware router not working

I tried it myself and it is working with a Linksys 5 port switch. I would recommend you try it and if still possible return the Linksys Router for a switch. They cost about $80.00 less. It also eliminates another NAT and will allow you to have access to the Arescom with NetDSL Manager.

This particular thread was a life saver for me - I was CURIOUS about the profusion of 192.168.***.*** addresses, but I hadn't got around to actually changing one of them. Thank you SO MUCH! I am now on line, sharing with my wife's computer and happy as a... CLAM!
