Re: SOCOM / gameshark / online / cheating Back in the 80's the DMCA didn't exist. Yes, the pain in the ass, badly written, overly restricting DMCA may help us. According to the DMCA, what the GameShark does, by altering the code of the game, could be deemed illegal. -- Hey everyone! I'm a WEB HOG! |

 | I thought all the gameshark did was change memory values or limit a program's ability to update values in memory. I wonder if this would still let the DMCA be valid.
Either way, how is a game coming out in this day and age where your system is the only one that knows "your" values. It wouldn't be that difficult for all the systems in a p2p game to store the value for each person and do simultaneous calcs on values, and desync a certain person whose values keep coming up wrong. (like with starcraft, for example) -- please let my at&t broadband work right today! |

| yes there is at least one console game (single player) that gameshark could not hack because of key value protection.. any change in "number of lives" or "ammo" etc would break the checksums and I suppose the effort to decompile the whole game to find out where the checksum routines were hidden was not worth it..
with client server similar stuff could be woven into the server side (and client side) to head off memory modification devices.
Since xbox now has such a thriving hacking community, with modchips allowing people to completely turn their xbox into a PC, with all the decompilation access that affords, but still play all the games (ripped etc), my prediction is that xbox live is going to have a small, but very persistent section of online cheaters that will ruin any kind of national competition or tournament played from home. |
