Re: THE LETTER

I know I have much more research to do on this site, but anyone still reading this forum, that had to go and find alternate broadband, can you explain this...

It appears I can get speakeasy.net DSL from my CO (GREAT! they are ranked high for speed of network and service on this site).
But the best AFFORDABLE package I can get is 1500/384, for $90
basically half the speeds EACH WAY I was getting with ION/BIZDSL but I save $35/month at least and this is 2 static IPS
but a friend in Denver, says he can get 1500/768 with statis from speakeasy for only $100/month
I'd pay the extra $10, but what!
it can't be distance, as he is 10,200 and i'm only 12,200
and I get 3000/768 now with ION

could it be they don't have the same DSLAM equipment in all CO's to offer the faster speeds?

They say I can get SDSL 768/768, but I'm NOT paying $160/month for that!
download is way too slow for that money

falkclan,

I'm in Denver and I'm using Cyberonic (Worldcom - www.cyberonic.com) 1500/768 and I'm getting 1250/610. The cost is $50/month with a $99 activation fee, free modem and no contract. It took 2 weeks to get set up after Sprint shut me off.

Similar story on Cyberonic for me in Los Angeles... but I had a problem with the first line that I tried to share the DSL on. Cyberonic was willing to cancel/ reorder on a different dialtone line (that worked the second time) in a period of 2 to 3 weeks.

But I also wanted more reliability than is possible with a single DSL line (and I was very worried that PacBell would deliver another bad Worldcom DSL line before Sprint discontinued service), so I ordered a month-to-month AT&T Cable internet service, too. They got going from order to on-line in 7 days. The cable pings from my left coast location to my right coast HQ are 20-40% lower than with Sprint Biz DSL.

I have combined the two with a Nexland Turbo Pro 800 router. Pings to my office VPN (routed over the cable connection) are faster, so it seems faster some of the time. Overall throughput for big files is substantially slower than Sprint DSL (even when using both connections). The Nexland handles IPSEC VPN tunnels much better than my old router.

The monthly cost is $95 ($50 Cyberonic and $45 cable) plus installation costs of $120 or so and $400 for the dual WAN router.

Now, if only Sprint was still around, I'd have the cable as backup to the Sprint connection.....

Have you checked to see if you can get Covad? Their TeleSoho 1500/384 is $69.95 with a two year contract.

here are the best options I have, even though I will go back and verify that I CANT get that cyberonic deal here.

Seems to keep my 768 upload (servers) I'd have to go SDSL, and $160 is the cheapest I've found for 768/768
BLAH, can't have that slow of download just to serve files at current speed

so for ADSL, here are the competitors (SWBELL is OUT, because 256kbps is the fastest upload they offer)
cable is ONLY comcast.net here, and they DO have a high speed option now, but it's 3500/384 MAX speeds, so doubt it would be stable, plus I like DSL better, since I'm on a CLEAN run of 12,000 feet.

here are the way I have them ordered now, feedback would be appreciated:

#3 - Megapath
1500/384 ADSL, routed connection, 2 static IPs, 5 email, 30MB webspace, 4 port modem/hub
Activation is free, but $299 equipment with $100 rebate
so $200 setup costs
$80/month with 1 year contract, no trial periods
nearest megapath HUB would be Chicago for me (from KC)

#2 - Covad
1500/384 ADSL, routed connection, 5 static IPs, 15 email, 10MB webspace, 4 port modem/hub
Activation is free, $199 for equipment but if order in October full rebate on that
so $0 setup costs
$80/month with 1 year contract, AND 30 day free trial period

#1 - Speakeasy
1500/384 ADSL, bridged connection, 2 static IPs, 2 email, 10MB webspace, nationwide 56k dialup
Activation is free, $99 equipment, but full rebate
so $0 setup costs
$90/month with 1 year contract, AND 25 day trail
free X-box and SB exitgy sound card with signup, while supplies last

I have covad and speakeasy close, but am leaning towards speakeasy, just beacause they are 2 hops to major backbones anywhere, strive for low latency, kids want the x-box , and I think it's worth the $10 more per month, unless someone tells me different
also, routed versus bridged, does it really matter to me as long as I have 2 static IPs, for only the 2 machines I'm running now? I still have a 10mbps 4 port hub here I can use with the modem they provide

AFAIK, Speakeasy is just reselling Covad service.

BUT - they have much better support, give you a static IP, and don't force you to use their NAT/FW. And they charge a bit more than Covad.
