| NOTE! SBC/Yahoo DSL-no 'free' personal web space This will only matter to you if you have a personal web site you want to put up.
If you are a new subscriber to SBC/Yahoo DSL, and you do not have a previous SBC account to migrate, your 'free' personal web space will be located on Geocities (replace cities with your own colorful moniker), which we all know is popup ad supported (which I don't consider 'free').
Why SBC/Yahoo would do this is beyond me, unless it's now some type of ad revenue plan and they are sharing the booty. Any other 'respectable' (not all, but a vast majority) ISP offers free personal webspace with no popups or banners required.
Just FYI for those of you considering signing up.
Geocities does have a non-ad plan, but it's an additional 4.95/mo, on top of the DSL fees you'll already pay. To me, that pretty much wipes out the savings I thought I was getting by signing up. I assumed (yep, I'll take the blame) that I would have a site on pages.sbcglobal.net, ad free, but that is not the case, unless you have an account with SBC that you are migrating to SBC/Yahoo, then you can keep your old ad free site.
In other news.. my connection, which came on 2 days early, is running pretty well, with occasional disconnects for no apparent reason (already discussed in another thread) and good speeds (1.2/130). -- All I wanted was a Pepsi |
|
 | But then again..... True, I hate the pop-up ads more than anything, but I think the Geocities web page will be better and I will tell you why. The prodigy server (which PB was using before this) had a program called "building blocks" where you had to go step by step through their program using their backgrounds and they pretty much built the site for you. It took forever to figure out how to FTP and I'm not really sure if it even works correctly. At least Geocities will give the option of making an individual web page, without the same background as everyone else. |

Just FTP into »ftp://home.pacbell.net with your username and password and upload the site into your directory. -- Live fast, die without regrets |

If you have an email ending at pacbell.net thats where you setup your web space. For sbcglobal beats me. -- Live fast, die without regrets |

Geocities has NO ftp access... they removed it about a year ago.. so your really stuck using the page builder ot file uploaded (and that really sucks!) -- Webmaster Steve - - - - - - - - - - - - »ppnhost.com »sphenterprizes.com »pokemonpalace.net |

I have a pacbell.net email address (for 2 yrs now) and I've never set up a personal home page. When I go to the PacBell Personal Home Page site in the attempt to set one up now, this is all that shows after the login page: "Welcome to Personal Home Page from PBI" "Please visit www.yahoo.sbc.com to sign up for personal home page."
From what I've seen here, that page will take me through the merge thing and I don't want to do that yet, so it looks like I missed my chance for a pop-up free website. Darn, drat, dang and...so forth. Fred |
|
 | Uh huh....if you are pacbell.net and either deactivated your personal web page OR never set it up, there is a glitch that directs you to sbc.yahoo.com, which you can't use until everyone migrates to the yahoo server (I think some time next year). I know they are working on a fix, but I haven't heard about any resolution yet... |

Were you one of the early migration customers from this site? -- It truly is the lowest level where we ALL make the difference. |

Nope...Just sittin' tight with my original PacBell account.
I'd like to think that what Snow42 said is true, but I did think that perhaps my firewall is overly fired up and maybe that interferes with some sites' normal functioning. |

Re: NOTE! SBC/Yahoo DSL-no 'free' personal web space Just to reassure some people. If you were to migrate you would not need any Yahoo! software. All you would need is a PPPoE software or capable router. If you are static you don't need to worry about the software at all. Only thing that really changes about your account is that you are now going through Yahoo! email servers. -- Force has no place where there is need of skill. -- Herodotus |

Re: NOTE! SBC/Yahoo DSL-no 'free' personal web space What do you get when you try these
»secure.pacbell.net/sbc/php_login.html
Use your username & password
When I log in using »secure.pacbell.net/sbc/php_login.html I get;
Welcome to Personal Home Page from PBI ! You currently have a Personal Home Page at no additional cost as part of the Extra Access Plan.
Do you want to continue with this service or deactivate ?
Is that trying to migrate me to Yahoo???
If I use »home.pacbell.net/pagetools/cgi-bin/start.cgi put my username & password in, log on it takes me to my Page Manager Menu...
