| OT: Neat device
Just received the La Crosse Cost Control meter. You input your electricity cost in kwh, and after awhile, it will display your cost to operate whatever you have plugged in (up to 1800 watts)in days, weeks or years. It also displays real time wattage being used if you want to do the calculation yourself. It appears to be accurate when compared against a commerical wattmeter (+/- 2 watts). About $47 shipped from this site : »www.weatheraffects.com/1279.htm Shop around and I'm sure you will a lower price on the net. My costs are : AMD XP-1500, linksys cable router/switch, cable modem and a 17" monitor, running Seti = $.35 per day Turn off the monitor (as it is 23 hrs per day)and it drops to $.22 per day Crunching Seti appears to draw 21 watts. ($.036 per day) Now to check my better halfs 1500 watt hair dryer and all the lights she leaves on -- Normal is what you call people you don't know real well. |

| Wow, that's a really neat idea! I suppose you are on BGE's electricity and paying similar to what I am paying? Now I don't feel too bad about leaving my computers on and crunching. 2 comps crunching for under $1 a day? Not bad at all. -- "Are you on the Distributed Computing Map?" |

gee thanks for that link jbags! I bookmarked the page and I definitely want to get one next Friday! I run 3 boxes 24/7 with the monitors off on all three at night and one the monitor is only on when my grandson comes over and uses it.

Why didn't you tell me about that device a few weeks ago? I bought one of these for $50, and I have to make a pigtail with the wires separated, so I can insert just one of the leads through the clamp to take a reading.
Then I have to cipher the results by hand!!!

Right your are Seaquake. However, BGE says to use $.0450 per kwh but I calculate the actual from my last bill. Total electric cost divided by total kwh's which raises it to $.0736. That includes the distribution charge, state surcharge and franchise tax. --John -- Normal is what you call people you don't know real well. |

Paul I have one of those also. It is an ancient Amprobe. Good for air conditioners and motors where you can get to the individual wires but tough on stuff you plug into the wall. Get a cheap extension cord--the flat kind. Runs about 79¢ or so. Run a knife through the center, lengthwise, to separate the leads. Voila! -- The river delight to lift us free, if only we dare let go. -- Richard Bach Team Starfire SETI@Home |

| Quicker than a trip to the hardware store, I had a 3' pigtail, I ran it through a old work box, added a receptacle, split the wires, and went to town. Had all the stuff in the storeroom already... The pigtail has 14 ga. wire, and a ground, so it'll plug right into any power strip or cord!

If those are fixed costs, rather than a percentage charged, then you do not need to figure them into the cost of crunching because you have to pay them even with the crunchers off. If they rise and fall with the bill, then adding them in makes it more accurate. -- Unlock'em,lap'em,Hang'em on the wall |

Unfortunately they are not fixed. They are calculated per kwh . I live in the land of Gov. Glendening where we are nickel-dimed to death. -- Normal is what you call people you don't know real well. |

| reply to jbags ordered mine from »www.weatherconnection.com/lacros···ky=56271 last Monday, and just got it today. $29.95 + $5.95 UPS ground = $35.90 total.
I'm going to play with it a while, first, testing my tv, vcr, stereo, and maybe a few lamps, before testing my crunchers and monitor. It'll show the actual watts currently used, max watts used, and total kw used. It'll use the cost/kwh you enter and show total cost, and based on the amount of time it's been operating, it'll estimate the cost per day, month, and year.
Out of curiousity, what is anybody else's electricity cost? Here in Hiram, GA, outside of Atlanta, mine's about 6.4cents/kwh. --
