Seagate HDD going kaput.....already.. :(

I just got this drive on 9-9-02... been working great and all of a sudden.. Scan-Disk starts popping up today..I'm like WTF? So I run SeaTools from my pc and also online and it's hosed... back up data immediately:(
I went to Seagate's site and did the diagnostics again and came up bad... I went to do the RMA online thing and the S/N and model number came up wrong!!..I emailed them tonight with details and await word from them.
I wonder if it something with these "OEM" drives that are being sold at Best Buy.
I had called in reference to the length of the warranty as it was 3 yrs on the retail box and this was researched and confirmed in an email to me from Seagate CS.
This sucks... it's not even acting weird or anything... even ran NAV to check for virii.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this... In the link is a pic I took of the HDD if you care to look:)

»Update on Seagate HDD's bought @Best Buy(warranty)

Thanks,

MG

Have you low level formatted the drive?

Not good to hear. I just replaced 2 "new" fubar 60gb Maxtors with a Seagate and a Samsung. They just went "phfft". (I put the Seagate in my server )

I think in the rush to market all drive makers are shipping some awful garbage.

Hey, they're not responsible for your data so they don't lose any sleep over marginal stuff. And the new policy of 1 year warranty on entry level drives leaves me wondering how confident the makers are about the product.

Hope your new drive spins long and happy.

amt257...what would that do and and do you think I should try that first? I seriously think it's hosed... I've done nothing new and all of a sudden scandisk runs every time I turn pc on and all test fail and tell me to back up amd RMA.
thanks,

Yes try low level format(zero fill the drive as some call it).
Here is a good read from Seagate about low level format.

said by Seagate Corp.:
The download routine for DiscWizard Starter Edition creates a bootable diskette. Boot from the diskette to start DiscWizard Starter Edition. After startup, Select Advanced Options | Maintenance | Options | Utilities. Select the drive you want to erase, then select Zero Fill or Low Level.
Download the DiscWizard Stater Edition utility from here.

Remember this will erase the whole drive. Backup what you need. This program will first run from Windows first, then it will create a DOS disk with the utility on it. Boot with the disk, then run the utility(low level format).

After you complete the format. Go ahead and use the diagnostic utility again and check for errors. Then if ok, go ahead and use the drive.

Keep in mind that the drive could still go bad on you so don't keep important data on it. Just use it for MP3's, videos, games, ect..
