Bob CarrickPremium,ExMod 2002 join:2000-04-24 New York, NY | reply to Bob Carrick OK. I have a 3 meg DSL connection. I am online 16 hours a day, as I work online, from home, for myself. I also enjoy Jedi Knight 2 online and watch streaming trailers from Apple.com and download the odd MP3. I am well above average for internet use. Studies easily support that.
Even when I was doing all the bandwidth testing I didn't go over 3.85 gig that month. I average 2 or 3 gig a month.
I have to really truly wonder what you do for more then 20 gig per month. I'd really like proof it's all copyright free and legal also. -- Bobhttp://www.carricksolutions.com - The largest PPPoE Help Website, including Tango Manager, EnterNet, WinPoET, MacPoET, Sympatico Access Manager,RASPPPoE, CFoS, NetVoyager, Broadjump SAM |

 | reply to Bob Carrick I stay under my 20/20GB limit every month. -- Grooovy!! |

 | reply to Bob Carrick I trade live-music (bands that allow taping) in SHN format via FTP and Direct Connect. Each show is approximately 1-1.4gigs (expands to 3 audio cds). I easily transfer 10-25 gigs per week. Totally legal, no porn, movies or warez. Just legally traded music...I also like to share a lot of what I have which is why I need upload bandwidth! Most of the places I download from are T1 or T3's, so I can get a 1.2gig show in an hour or so...explains my usage. |

which is probably why sympatico chose the caps the way they are...most of their users won't exceed it, hence the "low" (as its called) limits, but to the vast majority, it is more than enough. -- "The bitterness of poor quality lasts long after the low price is forgotten." |

FlipyoPremium join:2002-10-11 Canada | reply to Bob Carrick I'm personally over 20gig (sadly) due to my contract work (graphic design and document digitization takes a -lot- of space, and it's much easier to just send something electronically then to write a CD and deliver it). I also listen to a lot of online radio (high quality = high bandwith :-/ ), and trade and work on various DAP (digital archive project) episodes like Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (which has been okayed by the company, Best Brains). I don't pirate yet still go way over the limit - luckily, I moved to an unlimited service for now :-] If limits are imposed, I'll just have to write more CDs and mail them I guess... eek. |

hadean - Your career was normally one of the ones I would talk about when fighting against low caps. FlipyoPremium join:2002-10-11 Canada | reply to Bob Carrick Glad someone fights As an example, I had a subcontractor digitize a century-old ledger for me (as a project for a local heritage society) - for some reason, her burner died a few days before finishing the work - yet I needed to have the files as soon as possible - 50 pages at around 40 megs each (bloody TIFFs ;-p ), which came to 2 gigs. She sent them to my FTP just fine in a couple of days, yet took almost half of my Sympatico bandwith! Sadly, a similar thing happened with a client and my bandwith limit was blown away (at the end of my last month with Sympatico, I had around 10 gigs over my 5 gig limit).
Thankfully, Sympatico only charged me $30 and not the $80 I would have been charged (who knew they capped their overcharge?)... But still, I'd rather not have to go through that again. A 20 gig limit, for example, is a good amount and I shouldn't -have- to go over it if I'm careful (more CD writing, less MST3k downloading ;-p ) but 5 gigs is ridiculous for people who use it for work (and play, since I can sympathize with those who play modern MMORPGs, 1942, etc.).
Anyway, limits are fine within reason. Companies like Bell must understand that although 5 gigs seems like a lot, things are getting bigger and with more speed, people should be allowed to use the network for things never before possible (sending a client a 2 gig project). With game demos climbing past a gig, trailers (like LoTR) getting larger and larger and high quality internet radio stations we shouldn't be punished for doing completely legal things that a company shows people doing on their commercials.
Anyway, my $0.02. |

marnom join:2002-06-30 Lasalle, QC | Most of my downloads are Linux distros. I have maybe 30 to 40 different ones, and some of them are in the different versions. If you take only RedHat 8.0, it's on 5 full cds. I test all of these versions for my work and for my personal satisfaction. |

ender78 join:2002-10-17 Mississauga, ON | reply to Bob Carrick I don't think that 20-30GB/month is not something that users should be able to fight for. Its 200-300GB/month that people worry about. Even ppl like Bell may agree to such caps. |

| reply to Bob Carrick For me, sharing music music music w/ eDonkey (cds i've bought, ripped, APE'd). It has a forced upload so it creates a situation of an upload that is higher than the download. (September: 16 down/ 30 up) But I'm with IGS, so obviously not for much longer.
oh yeah, plus internet radio for hours on end. [text was edited by author 2002-10-25 23:33:20] |
