Completely prevent spyware from being installed...

SpywareBlaster has been released.

"SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

How? By setting a "kill bit" for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the installation of any of them from a webpage. You can run Internet Explorer with Active-X enabled, but you will never even get a "Yes/No" box popped up, asking you to install a spyware Active-X control (Internet Explorer will never download or run it!). All other Active-X controls or plug-ins will work fine.

The SpywareBlaster database contains information on these known spyware Active-X controls. Make sure you run the Check For Updates feature frequently to get the latest database! (And make sure you check the new items to protect your system against them!)

As a side benefit, setting this "kill bit" will also prevent the spyware Active-X from running, in many cases, if it is already installed on your system."

More information, and download, are available here: »www.wilderssecurity.com/spywareblaster.html

Enjoy!

WOW!
Way cool, Javacool.

(a 'bit' of prevention is worth a 'byte' of cure)

(EDIT: weird... I can ping and tracert to Wilders,
but for some reason, the page won't load.)

An updated installer is being put up as I type this.

The new installer includes a file some users may be missing - MSINET.OCX (it allows the definition updates feature to function)

UPDATE: The link in the first post above has been updated.
If you cannot get to the page, the direct download is available here: »www.wilders.org/HTMLobj-1466/spy···etup.exe

I do not believe Mozilla or Opera support ActiveX, however this still has the added benefit of disabling those spyware programs from running (and disabling the silent download of them through other programs that use the IE webpage display engine).

You can just disable downloading ActiveX content without another program.

The listing is what it blocks - anything checked will be killed when you click the button. (Items that are checked when you start the program are spyware applications you are already protected against.)

It doesn't run in the background - you run it, check the items you wish to be protected against, and it sets the "kill bit" for those items.

Can you tell us a little more about the 'killbit?' What is it, and how does your program utilize it?

Thanks

Certainly.

For every Active X control, there is a unique CLSID. That CLSID number identifies only that Active X control - no others.

In the registry, there is a section under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility
Under this section, you will find keys whose names are various Active X CLSIDs.

In each key is a DWORD value named "Compatibility Flags" - when set to a decimal equivalent of "1024", it prevents the Active X control with that CLSID from installing or even running (no Yes/No box, no worries).

SpywareBlaster creates a registry key corresponding to each spyware Active X control's CLSID, creates the DWORD value, and sets it to 1024 (decimal), thus providing the protection. New spyware Active X control CLSIDs will be added to the database as soon as they come out so you can also disable the possibility of those installing.

Hope this helps.
