| OOL FTP speed test is BULLSHIT When downloading test64 i usually get 1.2mb/sec , while when taking any other bandwith tests including the optimum online test at www.optonline.com i don't get over 5mbps. With or without a router. I tried downloading test64 from my friend's house who has a 56k he gets 30kb/sec on it.
When downloading regular files the speeds accelerate to 600 than deccelerate to 200. What is up? | |

| The test64 file is a text file. 56kb modems do compression which is why you see the higher then normal speeds when downloading the file.
Don't know if the modem would interpret test64.exe differently, in the same directory, but maybe try that.
As for your other speeds... what OS are you running, what Java, how fast a PC, etc.

First, as you've seen in this and other threads, there's been a general slow down in parts of LI during peak evening hours lately. You might be seeing some of that.
Second, as Josh Said, you may be somewhat limited by 80211.b. You could try hard wiring to your router or directly to your SB4100 to see if that's an issue.
And third... the BEFW11S4 has a 10 mb/s WAN port. Thus the well known issue between the SB4100 and 10 mb WAN port routers will be seen. The best speeds with that combo will be in the ~5 mb/s range.
So if you want to pin down where you're getting less speed than the rest of us, first run the ftp speed test directly connected to the SB4100 if possible. If speeds are faster, try hard wired to the router. If speeds aren't faster, call your friendly OOL tech support person.
If your speeds are faster with connected to the SB, you will have localized the slow down to the 10 mb WAN port, and/or 802.11b. | |

No one ever said everyone had to get the same speeds.
Forget about fabricated speed tests.
There are 2 tests that really matter in figuring out if you have a problem.
1 - The OOL Ftp test. That tests your connection without factoring in the "internet" in any way.
2 - Any large file from a fast FTP server outside of OOL - This does factor in OOL's backbone connection.
I suggest this file:
»ftp://ftp.aol.com/clients/aol80/comp01.000
If you get speeds over 700KB or so, then there's NOTHING at all to complain or worry about. That's the speed you are capable of getting. Why you score lower on some sort of java speed test, who really cares.
Let us know what you average for the above file. | |
