I sure hope that does not mean he's using both USB and ethernet.

any suggestions as to what tweaks i should use? I'm no paranoid about my speed. This about it this way. What good is 1mb if you don't get 1mb anywhere except OOL FTP test. I don't even get close to 400 on most of my downloads. I asked several people with OOL around my area to download from that the same files from different servers and they all get higher speeds that me at least twice as fast.

The download speed for the AOL test is between 380-420. It started out at 700kb like the majority of other downloads than slowed down to the speeds above. You see I'm not crazy!
I have the modem plugged in directly into my NIC.

You're probably going through a bump in the OOL road. It happens. It may be temporary.

It won't hurt to ask.

I just called and that stupid tech support guy was talking to me like i'm a freaking dumb ass. "We advertise speeds up to 100 times faster than 56k. UP to 100 times." He tried telling me how every server than i connect to has internet congestions and stuff, how the information takes a totally different path to my pc as oppose to my friend's PC who lives 7 blocks away. Blah Blah Blah! I'll just have to sit this one out

no it doesn't, that address shows up even if your not using usb, and its not possible to use both at the same time anyway

Eventually, yes.

When?

Only God knows.

When you use the OOL FTP to download, I may not be correct when saying this, but isn't it almost the equivalent of downloading something through your network and not the internet because all a cable modem does is create a LAN? The speed you get to a remote site would be completely different because it actually has to through the Internet.

It's not a pure LAN connection... you are going through multiple routers (hops) to get to the site. It's also effected by other elements such as multiple people pulling the file off a shared FTP server.

But it's less effected by routes and devices outside the control of OOL. Everything you're seeing when pulling that file is something OOL is responsible for. You aren't going over 3rd party networks and onto a machine that might be under powered for the load it needs to sustain.

Have you tweaked your OOL connection?

Yes, that is correct. One test is inside OOL Land and the other that I use for helping folks tweak is the AOL speed test which is outside of OOL Land.

A snip from my tweak posts ...

After that Run these Speed Tests.

Check your speed at these two sites:

Inside OOL
OOL FTP

Outside OOL
AOL FTP

You can stop both tests at the 50% mark. Note your speeds and post them.

FWI: Right at the moment the AOL test is 1.05 and the OOL test is 0.98. Go figure.

Most of the time they are almost equal.

this is weird. For some reason I believe Speakeasy the most. I wasn't able to download from any site faster than 100kb/sec. What do you think may be the problem here?

The Speakeasy test is the SLOWEST of the three tests.

OOL = 1.07 = 8786 in Speakeasy terms
AOL = 415 = 3400 in Speakeasy terms
-----------------

Why do you believe that the Speakeasy test is the best of the three?

because I tried downloading from fast sites like ICQ, mIRC, fast XDCC and other where i got 250-500 before, and now they don't even go into the 100 range. What can be causing this if my OOL test is 1MB/sec?
