Re: OOL FTP speed test is BULLSHIT

Your speeds will vary with the site (only can be as fast as the server can dish out), site is busy, Internet traffic, routing, problems with routers, etc.

Can you give me a link that I can try? One that I can get to from my browser and that does not need any "special" program.

I was downloading from some Russian site at the whopping speed of 1.2kB/s. EVERY server you download from will give you varying speeds of 0kB/s to over 1mB/s... you just never know, no matter how fast your connection is.

Try this. Its only 4mb, but i used to download at around 500 from there, while my friends got 800+ now I get 160 for 2 seconds than it drops down to 93.

I got 622KB = 5095 in Speakeasy terms.

It is a rather small file to use as a speed test. You need something big, like one of the M$ "monster" SPs.

you mean kilobits right when say Speakeasy terms?
What should i say when i call them? Their excuse is "Up to 100 times Dial UP"

I get about 1MB/s on that one, but it is really way too small for a good measurement.

Yes, speakeasy is kilobits.
---------------
Do a tracert to that site in the link that you gave me and let's see if there is something in the routing.
---------------
On that OOL "speedometer" test, it usually sucks for me. However, I ran it 3 times and got about 8100.

Now remember that I am in a "problem" area, so my speeds suck lately. On the M$ DL, all I got was 415.

There have been reported problems in Bkln in the last few weeks. There may still be a problem inside OOL Land.
---------------
Run that tracert and let's look at it.

OK. Try this. There is a small hole on the back of your MODEM. Use a paper clip or something and depress the microswitch in the hole. This will reset the MODEM.

Reboot the PC and Router.

Try a couple of speed tests again.
