When the Cable Modem is disconnected from the Internet, users on the LAN can be dynamically assigned IP Addresses by the Cable Modem DHCP Server. These addresses are assigned from an address pool which begins with 192.168.100.11 and ends with 192.168.100.42. No one ever said everyone had to get the same speeds.
Forget about fabricated speed tests.
There are 2 tests that really matter in figuring out if you have a problem.
1 - The OOL Ftp test. That tests your connection without factoring in the "internet" in any way.
2 - Any large file from a fast FTP server outside of OOL - This does factor in OOL's backbone connection.
I suggest this file: »ftp://ftp.aol.com/clients/aol80/comp01.000
If you get speeds over 700KB or so, then there's NOTHING at all to complain or worry about. That's the speed you are capable of getting. Why you score lower on some sort of java speed test, who really cares.
Let us know what you average for the above file. |

| reply to Irish Shark any suggestions as to what tweaks i should use? I'm no paranoid about my speed. This about it this way. What good is 1mb if you don't get 1mb anywhere except OOL FTP test. I don't even get close to 400 on most of my downloads. I asked several people with OOL around my area to download from that the same files from different servers and they all get higher speeds that me at least twice as fast. |

| reply to Lex Luthor The download speed for the AOL test is between 380-420. It started out at 700kb like the majority of other downloads than slowed down to the speeds above. You see I'm not crazy! I have the modem plugged in directly into my NIC. [text was edited by author 2002-10-30 17:17:47] |

no it doesn't, that address shows up even if your not using usb, and its not possible to use both at the same time anyway -- -=God Is Pretend=- |
