Earthlink Pop-UP Blocker and other ISPs.

Just out of curiosity, will Earthlink's Pop-UP Blocker work with other ISPs?

Earthlink's Pop-Up Blocker is 1) just a browser "plug-in" to Internet Explorer and 2) a program that they've licensed from Guardwall.com (»www.guardwall.com/en/guardie.asp and »www.internetnews.com/isp-news/ar···/1448771). You save money by getting it from Earthlink...

Now, what's stopping someone from another ISP from downloading and using EL's version ??

Then that answers my question. I guess anyone could download it and use it and save $35.

Maybe Earthlink thinks I'm not a subscriber 'cause I downloaded it, installed it, and it must be hidden real well... I certainly don't see it !!

Do you have access via another ISP ?? Try and download it and see if EL allows you to. They may block access to that page or to the file itself based on your IP address.

Try this to see it --taken from the Pop-UP Blocker FAQ:

Right-click in the Internet Explorer Toolbar [the Toolbar is at the top of the Explorer window and contains the Back, Forward, and Stop buttons] and check Pop-Up Blocker.

If Pop-Up Blocker is checked, but you still can't see the buttons, try resizing or moving your Internet Explorer toolbars. (If you don't know how to do this, click the Internet Explorer Help menu for help.)

I don't have another ISP to try it on. Have Netzero, but it does not seem to work anymore.

Yeah, yeah, I know all that that... I just looked to download it again and the pages says this:

The full version of Pop-Up Blocker is only available through the TotalAccess 2003 Task Panel. You must install TotalAccess 2003 before you can download and activate Pop-Up Blocker.

I do NOT use TotalAccess... Got it handy ??

Well-- you said you couldn't see it , but then you already had it, but really you didn't see it to download it...... Don't confuse me. I don't have TotalAccess. I have looked at it, can't think of much use for it.
I see where it says you need the TotalAccess thing. Maybe that answers my question about being used with other ISPs. Looks like they have eliminated getting it as a stand alone.

Found it. Don't tell anybody but you can still get it here:

»support.earthlink.net/support/DL···blocker/

Maybe it will only work until it expires on 1/31/2003 and then you have to download the TotalAccess stuff.

Okay, to clear up *your* confusion...

I downloaded it AND installed it a few weeks ago, before they made it somewhat dependent on their TotalAccess software "suite". I worked with it a little bit: restarting IE, restarting Windows, etc, etc. Then I thought, "Hey, I use Mozilla 90% of the time and it has a popup-blocker built-in !".

I did not find the POP-UP Blocker as a stand alone download off the link for the Earthlink download center (see above)

What happens after after 1/31/03, will the stand alone product cease to work?

Ok- you have to be careful. I confuse easily.

Something smells wrong about this. It's either a "SITS" (Suck-In-Then-Screw) marketing ploy like cell-phones went through a few years back or a variation to get Earthlink software on machines. Since marketing-data-collecting is the prolific money-maker these days I'm always leery.

So on 1/31/03 *this* stops working unless you load *that*... what's wrong with this picture? Don't your alarm bells go off? My BS alarms are ringing loudly.

All Comments Welcomed.

EDIT: Well, there is another possibility. It appears the requirement to install EL's TA is part of the licensing enforcement mechanism to protect the proprietary GuardWall PopUpBlocker program. TA can apparently be uninstalled after PopUpBlocker's installation or downloading - I cannot tell which. See ELNKrobert's post below. My alarm bells have dimmed a lot.

Yeah, chauq's link takes you to the one that suggests that TotalAccess is req'd; yours is the better link.

I believe the current Pop-Up Blocker is beta... actually, the page calls it "preview":
This preview release of the free Pop-Up Blocker tool will expire on January 31, 2003. Before your preview release expires, EarthLink will prompt you to download and install the final version of Pop-Up Blocker.
Dunno what happens then if you don't install TotalAccess. Heh, you could pay GuardWall for their version !

Pay $30--Don't think so. I would consider downloading the TotalAccess thing first, or download a freebie.

I have been told by reliable sources that after 1/31/03, if you do not uninstall Pop-Up Blocker or install TotalAccess software.... It's a Y2K + 3 and 1 month thing. LOL

Earthlink Electronic Support Response

This is a support response from Earthlink

The previous version of the pop up blocker that was available for download was just the preview/beta version.
If you wanted to download the beta version you had to login to the support page. If you haven't already logged into the support page and attempted to download the pop up blocker it would prompt you for your email address and password.
You had to have a valid Earthlink email address and password to be able to download the software.

The fully certified version of Pop-up Blocker is only obtainable through Total Access 2003, however it is still separate from TA. That is, you must have Total Access 2003 installed to get the certified release of Pop-up Blocker, but you can then uninstall Total Access 2003 and the Pop-up Blocker will not be affected.

Thanks for the clarification. A few more questions. What is the difference between the beta and final version? Will the beta version work after the end of January, 2003 or do you have to install TA. If you install and then uninstall the TA software, do you have to start over reconfiguring your original start page? Inquiring minds want to know.

The final version has a couple of added features that the beta version did not have. To the best of my knowledge the beta version will expire on January 31, 2003. Want to see if that is actually true? Try adjusting your systems clock to January 30th 11:59 pm and see if it stops working. I do not have the pop up blocker installed at the moment so I can't verify if this is indeed the case.
If you uninstall then reinstall the TA software it will not affect the settings that you have on your start page.

I will wait and see. Messes too many things up to forward the clock. The computer does not like that.

My question about the install, uninstall was if you install TA then uninstall it are we back to the old edited personal start page that that we originally set up? Not being familiar with TA, Do you still have your same start page?

I apologize for the confusion. My mind was thinking one thing but my fingers typed something else.

If you uninstall the TA software it will not affect your start page. Here is a test you can do to confirm that. Configure your start page on one computer, then go to another computer and login to the start page. Your start page will look the same on computer B as it does from computer A. That is because your settings are stored on the server not locally on your machine. The only way that your machine and the start page work together is the cookie that it drops on your computer so you do not have to re-login to the PSP.
