 | BellSouth Westell Modem Frustrations I've been online with all kinds of modems since 1986, and I had DSL successfully for two years with Mindspring/Earthlink, but since I moved last summer and subcribed to BellSouth Fast Access DSL with their Westell Wirespeed A90-210030-04 "Router", there has been nothing but problems. And I thought I knew a little something about about this stuff, having successfully operated a Linksys BEFSR41 Router in my home and opening ports, etc. at will. Apparently I need help badly, and so far all the reading an experimenting I have done has not worked.
So far I have been completely unsuccessful opening any ports on the Westell 2100 and it appears all the changes made have no effect at all. I have the lastest firmware upgrade successfully installed. Is there a way to simply turn off the firewall totally on this Westell modem?
So, then I tried setting my network and was finally able to connect through the Linksys router by setting the Westell to Bridged Mode. However, opening ports in the Linksys does not open them as in the past. Is it necessary to duplicate the settings in both the Westell and the Router in order for this thing to work?
Any help with this problem would really be appreciated. My technical confidence has undergone a serious setback. |

| The best advice I can give you is use the reset on the modem. You can use the button in the back or do it through the interface to get the modem back to its defaults. Then I suggest you use the "IP Passthrough" or the "Bridged Mode". Do not duplicate the settings on the router and the modem...use one or the other. You have three ways to run this 1) Simply take the username/password off the Westell and use the PPP client on the router because the modem has PPP pass through. 2) Use the "IP passthrough" mode which puts your modem and router completely in the DMZ. You must put the username/password on the Westell and use its PPP client if you use IP Passthrough. 3) Use the bridge mode on the modem and put the username/password on the router and open up the router that way. I understand what you're saying about you used to forward ports at will with the Linksys.
Strange... Resetting the modem to defaults, then putting the modem in bridge mode, and then using a Linksys to perform the PPPoE login and forward ports should have worked. That's my current setup and it works fine.
Modem (LAN port) - (WAN Port) Linksys (LAN ports) - PCs
The methods Andy mentioned above should work as well. I would go with option #3 since you're used to working with the Linksys router. If you have the latest firmware for the modem, once it's been configured for bridge mode, the username and password fields are no longer existent in the modem. I would still do as Andy said and reset the modem to defaults, then switch it to bridge mode.
Do you have a software firewall like ZoneAlarm, BlackICE, or Norton Internet security installed that could be blocking the forwarded ports?
FYI: With the latest firmware for the WS2100, version 1.5.4, the internal firewall has been disabled and removed completely.
Have you seen these FAQs? »/faq/5381 »/faq/4908
Are you using static IPs for your PCs or DHCP? If DHCP, did you reboot your PC after connecting the PC to the Linksys and the Linksys to the WS2100? Remember, if you PCs LAN IP changes, the forwarding rule in the Linksys is no longer valid until the forwarding rule is changed to match the IP of your PC.

 | Have you tried telnetting into your modem?
192.168.1.1 |
|
 | Actually the address for the Westell is 192.168.1.254 |

LeeWL join:2002-11-10 Morrisville, NC | I too have joined the list of those having problems with this demonic Westel device. I just got a Netgear MR314 and have been using my DSL hooked up directly to my computer for a couple of weeks. I reset the modem and used the method number 3 above and from the FAQ and the I can browse the net on my wired PC but not on my wireless card. Also, once I followed method 3, I cannot access the Westell modem at 192.168.1.254, I can still get to my router's config page. Doing a ipconfig /all yields similar results on both the wireless and wired machines, with only the actual IP being different. Why in the world can't I see the net from my laptop or get to the config page of the modem at all?
TIA

| I would refer to the documentation for the NetGear router and wireless card to solve that problem. Sounds like the router and wireless card don't have matching wireless settings.
Once you connect a router to the WS2100, the ability to access the modem becomes tricky.
Refer to this thread for the details: »Successfully access Sth interface through Linksys?
Specifically these posts: »Successfully access Sth interface through Linksys? »Successfully access Sth interface through Linksys?
You basically have 3 options. 1) Disconnect the router from the modem and connect a PC directly to the modem 2) Do the hub / switch method from the above links 3) Do the reconfigure router option from the above links.
Options 1 and 3 will cause a loss of Internet access. -- "When you set yourself on fire and aim for the sky, you hope to leave behind some sparks of heat and light ... Like a vapor trail." - Neil Peart 2002 |

LeeWL join:2002-11-10 Morrisville, NC | reply to FROSTY OK, thanks for the help, so the fact that I can't see the modem is normal. That sure helps troubleshooting my problem then. I does sound like I might havbe an issue with the wireless card. I guess I'll run down and buy another brand card to test out.
I might suggest that the FAQ be amended to note that you lose access to your modem when running in that config as that info would have saved me some headache yesterday. |

Go into Expert Mode and and under the Configure Button click on Connection. There is a Protocol pull down at the top; select "Bridged Ethernet". here's the screen capture »i.dslr.net/pics/faqs/image3035.gif. Andy Houtz BSIS TSG |

themus join:2002-12-04 Greenville, SC | I have a new Westell Modem with 1.05.04 firmware and I cannot access the Home Tab and the Expert Mode. The tabs are there, but nothing happens. Any clues?
So far I have noticed a BIG swing in speed. I had earlier today a speed of 38kbs and just a few minutes ago 1222kbs. The speed seems to be slower as well from my Charter Pipeline. Again, any ideas would be appreciated. |

 | reply to rwright Sundro, Welcome to the forum. The best thing you can do is start a new thread with your specifics. What you need to do first off is update your firmware to 1.05.04 »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How do I upgrade the firmware on a Westell 2100/2200/6100 modem?. It will solve some of your problems. | reply to rwright Thanks to this thread I figured it out. You should be able to get it to work, too.
I have the Westell, connected to a wireless router (dlink 614+) and also had problems with the Cisco VPN
My settings that work:
Westell in bridged ethernet mode (as described in this thread)
Router configured for PPPoE with an MTU of 1300 (I could likely go larger, but have not had the patience for experimentation yet)
IP connections on my laptop and my desktop also configured for MTU 1300 (used the DrTCP tool announced here).
Phew! |

Re: BellSouth Westell Modem Solutions Using the Westell modem mentioned above and the Linksys befsr41 v.2. Initially I had issues because the Westell modem has dhcp auto enabled. I really liked the Options on the Westell for port enabling. So I disabled dhcp on my router. I'm using the nat setup options. There are auto setups for various games, as well as an option to create your own port settings. |
