Unless of course having multiple premiums on one iO hookup are against the TOS......

CATV is CATV. it does not matter if it is channel 4 or HBO.

if i call OOL tech support and ask them why my HTTP server is not working they say they cant help because they dont support it. if i call OOL tech support and tell them my server rack is having connectivity problems connecting with my cable modem they would say they cant help because they don't support it. they dont support it means you are NOT allowed to do it.

Um no....Don't support it means they DON'T SUPPORT IT.

If you call up and ask about your HTTP server not working..no, they don't SUUPORT it because you didn't get it with your connection, they never set it up and they don't know the details of every webserver.

Just like if you call up OOL and ask them why when you play UT 2003 you suck...they will tell you they don't support it.

If you call up and ask them why when using MIRC you get alot of disconnects and have problems with DCC...they will tell you THEY DON'T SUPPORT IT

If I call OOL and tell them my girlfriend won't have sex with me while I browse the web and I want to know how to fix it they will say THEY DON'T SUPPORT THAT...

Now does this mean I can't play UT2003, can't use IRC, and can't have nooky while websurfing?...no..it just means they aren't trained to fix those problems

what happens on 1.01.03?
some of the channels in his area are going from not being scrambled (can watch without any cable box) to being scrambled... i think this applies to hbo and some others... so he doesn't have to get a box, unless he still wants to keep the channels

OK damn I didnt think this was going to be such a debate when I posted the question. Now there are a few posts that have gotten off the subject which I down right know the answer to.I had cablevision come into my house to verify it was a one family house. So I was bullshitting with the service tech.Cablvision doesnt care how many splitters you have on your tv service .He stated years ago they did but it was a losing battle. He did state they dont like you to put singnal amplifiers on your line, but they cannot do anything about it.As for the servers this is an absolute not, OOL is for residential service only,
This is from the TOS:
SUBSCRIBER MAY NOT RUN A SERVER IN CONNECTION WITH THE OPTIMUM ONLINE SERVICE, NOR MAY SUBSCRIBER PROVIDE NETWORK SERVICES TO OTHERS VIA THE OPTIMUM ONLINE SERVICE.

Examples of prohibited uses include, but are not limited to, running servers for mail, http, ftp, irc and dhcp and multi-user interactive forums.
As for the original question about routers.I do beleive a cable modem is for 1 computer as far as cablevision is concerned. I was almost tempted to call and ask for myself but I hate dealing with them.

No problem... clearly the guy was in here solely to stir up trouble anyway long after we'd established in this thread that routers were just fine, and when overwhelming evidence was presented to him refuting his position, he felt he had to continue presenting flawed arguments to back up his ridiculous claim rather than simply admit he was wrong.

The tangent ended up being more productive than the main topic in this case.

Of course they are allowed... OOL says so....

My question to online support:
Is a router allowed to be used on OOL? Is it breaking any agreements that I made when I signed up for the service?

The entire chat session once I was connected to a rep (except my address is x'ed out):

Your Optimum Online Tech Support Specialist will join you momentarily.
Cablevision: Your Optimum Online Tech Support Specialist, Peter, has arrived.
Peter: Welcome to Optimum Online's Live Technical Support!

Verifying Account ...
An Optimum Online Technical Support Rep will be with you shortly.
Peter: Hello, my name is Peter , I received your question and I will be assisting you today.
Peter: I will need to verify your account information. May I have your full billing address please?
GeekNJ: Here's my info: xxxxxxx
Peter: thanks
Peter: yes, you can use a router it does not affect our network
GeekNJ: And I'm not breaking any rules using one? I know tech support doesn't provide support, but they are allowed?
Peter: no, you can use a router in your home
GeekNJ: Ok great, thanks for the prompt response.
Peter: Can I assist with anything else regarding Optimum Online?
GeekNJ: Nope, thanks again

So, if you don't believe it for yourself, connect in. I'm saving the url for this post so I can reference it in the future.

Re: I thought routers were not allowed on OOL

ask enough people and eventually someone will say what you want. what was wrong with the answer you got from the person that actually knows what he is talking about? was it no good because it did not agree with you?

this has become quite pathetic, i could find a tech to say the moon is made of cheese if i ask enough of them.

you asked rick and he did not say yes. the answer is NOT yes. get over it, its not like i am asking anyone to actually admit they are wrong. just STFU already because its really sad now.

As already posted, but you must have missed the 2 references to it as you only read what posts you feel might somehow be taken out of context in your favor, Rick didn't say No, which he would have it was not permitted and he said, and I quote, "So why listen to anyone who says otherwise on DSLR?"." which is directly referencing you and your statement that they aren't allowed.

Since you pasted the entire response, you know I took nothing out of context.

I didn't ask multiple reps. I asked one!! 1, uno, one!!

STFU??? I'm sorry, but I thought you were old enough to have a discussion. Obviously, you're no more mature then a small child. Maybe mommy or daddy will take away your internet access after they see the language you're using.

I apologize in advance. I have been thinking about this for a long time and I have reached a point where I can no longer control myself.

Why do we have to wait until tomorrow? Can't someone make it happen today?

In this case, I invite YOU to ask enough people at Cablevision and see how long it takes before someone there gives YOU the answer that YOU have been fabricating.

Funny... The first person I asked gave me the same response as GeekNJ:

Cablevision: Your Optimum Online Tech Support Specialist, Patrick, has arrived.
Patrick: Good day and Thank you for using optimum online live technical support where you are a valued cablevision customer. My name is Patrick. I have read your question and I will be assisting you today. Please give me one moment and I will address all of your problems and questions.
Patrick: I will need to verify your account information. May I have your full billing address please?
Me: --------------------------------------
Patrick: Thank you. You can use the router be we just do not support them.
Patrick: We have many customers who use them.
Me: I realize you do not support them, but are you breaking ANY stipulations of the TOS by using one?
Patrick: No.

Me: OK, great. Thank you for your time... I just wanted to check.
Patrick: You're welcome.
Patrick: Can I assist with anything else regarding Optimum Online?
Me: Thats all for today, thanks!
Patrick: We appreciate your business and thank you for using Optimum Online Live Technical Support. Please be aware we are available from 9am to midnight, seven days a week. Have a nice day.

No your inability to admit when you are wrong is the problem. I explained what the TOS says to you several times. Now you are simply spreading FUD.

Here is an old post by Rick where he clearly stated that Routers are not a violation of the TOS. The OOL employees tend not to like to get into user disputes about what is a violation of the TOS.

»groups.yahoo.com/group/lioptonli···ge/14227

You are very intelligent but you have a tendency to simply ignore when people explain things to you and simply say I am right, if you continue this way you are certainly going to continue to have problems posting here.

TWG,

Thanks for digging up that post...

Jeeze, they even offered to test the unit for the guy in their labs..

Then again, if you follow some other's lines of thinking, that could have just been some complex ploy to confiscate the illegal equipment in question..

To be honest Bobcat I really try and stay away from copying and pasting Ricks posts here, but given the extent of this thread and that it is you that is asking.

quote:
John, I think you're overstating the case a bit here OOL does not support the Linksys, but we do not disallow it. If you want, drop me a private email and we'll arrange to test the unit here in our labs.
Plenty of people here in LIOptonline use the Linksys to network
multiple devices in the home, so I doubt that is the problem.
