Re: Cablevisions TVGuide channel --Oops Runtime.dll

they should have learned how to use the system before they started using it...

the video for the ads is just black while the sound is playing, best part is the one just on was where the guy is talking about how the satellite picture would go out...hehehe

the ad video also freezes a billion times a day

the channel list has gotten stuck a number of times, and the other day was totally missing

So, from that, I gather they are relying on the computer to cycle through the ads and play them...

Gosh, if they can't compress and play an ad in a tiny little window without having it freeze up... god only knows how bad their satellite service is going to be.

I don't think anyone would run satellite service via a Windows computer...

It's a more modern platform than they used a few years ago. The local community news bulletin board channels were running on an Amiga. Remember seeing them crashed, too.

I remember that channel sometimes had a menu on the screen, along with the mouse cursor the whole day without any ads. Did not look like Windows platform...

guru meditation     n.
Amiga equivalent of `panic' in Unix
(sometimes just called a `guru' or `guru event'). When the
system crashes, a cryptic message of the form "GURU MEDITATION
#XXXXXXXX.YYYYYYYY" may appear, indicating what the problem was.
An Amiga guru can figure things out from the numbers. Sometimes a

guru event must be followed by a
Vulcan nerve pinch.

This term is (no surprise) an in-joke from the earliest days of the
Amiga. An earlier product of the Amiga corporation was a device
called a `Joyboard' which was basically a plastic board built onto
a joystick-like device; it was sold with a skiing game cartridge
for the Atari game machine. It is said that whenever the prototype
OS crashed, the system programmer responsible would calm down by
concentrating on a solution while sitting cross-legged on a
Joyboard trying to keep the board in balance. This position
resembled that of a meditating guru. Sadly, the joke was removed
fairly early on (but there's a well-known patch to restore it in
more recent versions).

is this the real tv guide channel? or the CV one..

if it's the real tv guide channel blame them.... they are always futzing with the code and screwing things up...

BTW the machine that runs the tv guide channel(at least mine) is a dual processor(P3) compaq 4U rackmount PC running NT4, it has a buttload of ram and either 3 or 5 SCSI drives.... i don't remember, i haven't had to open it since they screwed it up in the last code update.

It is most definitely a Windows 9x dialog box... The nifty little x in the top right corner is the give-a-way...

Actually...

Its 2000 or XP....

The command prompt window icon in the left corner is the giveaway...

9x machines show the MS-DOS logo there...

My guess is NT4. Command prompt instead of DOS, and old fashioned X.

I'm going to guess that it would be Windows 2000.

Windows NT 4 is no longer supported by Microsoft, so why would they use that? Especially if they just upgraded.

Also, I don't believe NT4 would let you have that faded title bar.

It's probably Win2k Advanced Server with load balancing. Too bad it didn't hang in there for long.. What, about 3 weeks or so when they made the change? I noticed the picture box on that upper right corner faded out about a week ago. I guess nobody decided to check for updated runtime drivers on the Server box. All they did was probably recycled (rebooted) the pc.

Who knows..

But I agree with those who said 2000 or XP. I highly doubt XP though.

Call Cablevision and ask them about their system.
They might not tell you though.

You can always try to start the call like this. "Hello, this is Charles Dolan."
