| Worst Problem With Cogeco Ever.....
before i start my rant let me just say that if this post is full of typos and mistakes then its because I'm so pissed right now i can hardly think so here goes.....
About a week or a week and a half ago my internet went out and my modem couldnt reconnect i figured it was related to the problems I was having earlier where the modem would cut out. So i called tech support and after about the 3rd call i got someone to book me a service appointment. Now we have already established that it is not a problem in my house it is a problem out in the box. So a week later the guy comes and after about 2 minutes he says there is nothing he can do and he would have to call a matenance guy to come out and fix it. That didnt seem so bad to me because he said guy wouldd come out the same day or the next day so after 3 days of waiting and no matenence guy I called tech support again. First time I called i got some guy who just kept telling me to reset my modem and the next time I called I was told that i would be without internet for 1 or 2 more weeks because Cogeco needs to get a permit to dig up my front lawn and fix something. That was the last straw, this has been by far the worst experiance I have had with Cogeco. Though I'm not thinking of switching right now because when my connection does work it works extremely well and the only other broadband alternative in Georgetown is Bell.
So thats my rant. Some of you may be wondering "how the hell are you posting this right now?" well by some miracle of God my connection is working right now but i dont expect it to last long so I figured I'd come post this before it goes down again.
(yes this was a poitless post I just wanted to vent some of my frustration) |

| reply to QuickSurfer Last night my modem went out and didn't come back, so an hour later I called tech support just to listen to the messages and see if there was a problem in my area... there was none so I waited and spoke to a "representative" not a tech, a "representative" I talked to him for a while and he said my modem was defective and to bring it in to the storefront.... ok
I couldn't do that today as I didn't get home until just a little while ago BUT when I got up this morning the modem had come back online and was working fine. Or so I thought. Today when I finally got off work, my wife told me that she had no connection... ok I rebooted her computer... nothing no ip address... ok power cycle the modem... nothing still no IP... I called support again and some human told me that me it's NOT my modem and to contact the manufacturer of my NIC card!! ... hang up on that guy and phoned back and again explained (in detail) my problem to a different "representative" this human tells me that it's my cheap little switch that I've had for the past year!! I think not.
Ok so I give up on those people and go back to trying to get it to work myself. 3 power cycles and 3 reboots later she finally got an IP address. Maybe it is my modem?
BUT I'll tell you this, in the past.... 3 weeks maybe? I have been having trouble with my online game, Motor City Online which uses TCP if my ping is above 50ms and UDP if my ping is below 50ms The problem is that when using TCP I get dissconnects way too often. So I tried a little experiment:
MCO has 4 servers, on which a persona (your character) resides and you cannot transfer it to the other 3 servers, well one of these servers gives me a lower ping than the others and thus uses UDP (TCP if my ping is greater than 50, UDP if my ping is above 50) So I created a new character on that server. Well using UDP I had ZERO disconnects... BUT later that night my ping rose to 60 with the higher server population and TCP kicks in.... BAM!! I got disconnected 3 times in 45 min.
I contacted the guys at EA to see if there was a problem with the servers and they told me there is not... I don't know what else to do.

| reply to QuickSurfer In reply to quick surfer. They are right they need a permit to dig things up to fix it. There is no getting around it , if they did it without a permit they could get in troble. Your just gonna have to sit tight until they get the permit and fix it. TW menthos I had the same problem as you and I got them to give me a new modem and never had the problem again. So maybe you should go get a new cable modem. Try using the intenret without the switch for alittle bit and if thep roblems continue then its probably the cable modem. Also if you have a switch and internet goes out on both computers at the same time then its not your nic card |

It's hard to troubleshoot, and I can honestly say that the same problem can present different symptoms in the course of troubleshooting. For example, you may have no connection, but switching the patch cable gives an intermittent connection. It's hard when there are other pieces of networking equipment in your setup, nevertheless can tell you all about how much he loves Linksys router in WAN stealth mode. The whole "it's been working fine for a year" argument holds no water with me, my car was fine one day and then bam, engine blew up. Things break, and we do our best. -- Why soar with the Eagles. | reply to Tyrano2K I went the same garbage when I first got my cogeco, exact almost except you sometimes had service. They told me they needed to put my line in the ground for it to be fixed the first phone call. Second time supervisor said record when you're down and call us in week, so that happens they just say we'll remberse you. So say like get a tech out here to fix this I want service not my money back. So tech comes out see's my internet was working at the time, checks the signal then goes outside comes back 5 mins later says it's the box on the street and it needs fixed and he can't do that. So I wait and wait couple weeks no guy comes out so I ended up pming zed a couple times and he finally got the maintaince guy out and he finds the amp's really messed and spent 3 hours fixing it. Well thats the story zed got the maintaince out their unlike phone or tech that came out. |

| reply to Viggen93 The only reason I hung up on him was that he told me that there were no problems in my area and that there was nothing wrong with my modem ( IT WAS OFFLINE HOW COULD HE TELL??) and that I should call the manufacturer of my nic. That was the entire conversation.... 5 seconds, not including the time he pretended to query my modem.
I knew my switch was working and I told the other guy that I was able to send files from my pc to my wife's through the switch.... and besides, it works fine now. |

Well...I keep hearing of these NIC Cards, they must be some pretty nifty devices.
Network Interface Card Cards...must be pretty tiny things, eh? Do they plug into your NIC to enhance them, or something?

| reply to QuickSurfer well........my connection is working again but it will probably only be about 5 minutes before it goes out again. This really starting to piss me off because by the time a tech comes out and fixes everything I will have been without a solid connection for almost a month. I guess i'll go take advantage of the fact that my connection is working since its such a rare occasion |
