| [Info] Recovering from a corrupted registry in Win XP. Monday morning one of my computers was started up and had a "Win XP cannot start file missing \windows\system32\config\system" error.
Of course there were some important files on there from Friday!! A search of MSKB turned up the following information associated with this error.
307545 - How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry that Prevents Windows XP from Starting
I was able to make the first batch file (a copy of which is attached as regcopy1.txt) which allowed me to get back on my computer and back up the files to a networked computer. This puts you back to the system configuration default and software that was on your computer when you first installed XP. The programs you added are still there and can be copied but not opened without re-installing them.
That is what the second batch file is supposed to do (attached as regcopy2.txt)....allow you to make a restore point, reboot and then restore. You will need the information found at this link 309531 - How to Gain Access to the System Volume Information Folder to help you with this step.
For some reason, I could not get that batch file to work. I still don't know why...but it would cause my machine to go back to the original error instead of letting me log back on. The good news is... that you can still get back on..by re-running the first batch file, but with no restore points. However now, with your data backed up, you can now repair or reinstall from the xp cd.
Later I found this other link that I wish I had found sooner. Although I was able to repair my xp install, I had to reinstall some other programs and restore favorites, links, etc. According to MSKB, one would not have to do that if they follow the instructions in the following link.
312369 - You May Lose Data or Program Settings After Reinstalling, Repairing, or Upgrading Windows XP
Hope this information helps y'all.
BTW: The original "problem" was not a software problem at all...It turned out to be caused by "New" bad memory stick installed the Friday before.
