USB WiFi adaptor = PCMCIA WiFi adaptor in USB support box.
We opened up an Intermec Wireless Access Point at work... and found exactly the same thing, a PC Card Wireless Card.

USB WiFi adaptor = PCMCIA WiFi adaptor in USB support box. Really, open one up and check.

From what I have read in other posts, pcmcia cards are well known for very short range. May want to experiment with a USB instead of pcmcia.
I have a linksys PCMCIA card and it works very well, almost as good as my ORiNOCO gold.

I can get a usable signal at 900 feet away from my own D-Link 900-AP access point using a Linksys PC Card, provided I have an unobstructed line of site to the WAP. With a Pocket PC (Symbol), I was able to go even further away with obstructions. The only major impediments for me appeared to be live trees and bushes and metal studs in walls.

May I suggest checking out the Broadband Reports wireless networking forum? We have many nice people who can help you in there...

...I'm having a problem with the distance my router will put out - I can only move about 12 feet away from the thing and I lose the connection. I have a netgear MR314 router, and a Linksys pcmcia card. Does anyone have any ideas, or is there a good troubleshooting website out there? I don't have any 2.4MHz interference (Like cordless phones, etc) and have placed the router all over my desk, away from other objects, nothing seems to work. Thanks for any help!
