| 5260 serial port I've looked at the FAQ and the threads that deal with adding a serial connector to the 5260, but the information is kind of confusing. I'd like to do it the easiest way possible.
If I get the Linear Technology LTC1386CS RS232 chip (which is what the 5660 has) and directly solder it to the pads on the board, will I still have to add 0.1uF capacitors on the underside of the board? Does this picture look right?

marathonmikeBeer. You can only rent it join:2001-12-12 Princeton, NJ | reply to uziq Any should work, but they must be .1uf The smaller size enables the unit to be reassembled in the case. If they are polorized (have a + and - ), you could have problems unless you know which way to install them. |

| reply to uziq The cap with a '+' sign showing appears to be a tantalum capacitor, I am assuming that the other 3 are tantalums too. If this is working box shown on the pic, I would stick with the same kind of caps and make sure the polarity is correct when you solder the parts to the PCB. Just my 2 cents [text was edited by author 2002-11-21 16:26:46] |

Use 0805 surface mount chip caps. They work great and are easier to solder and less troublesome than polarized thru-hole caps like the ones pictured. Basically any 0.1uF caps will work, it's just a matter of what seems easier for you to solder. I did this mod where I added the right IC, five caps to the bottom and I also added a connector. Bought a serial cable from Efficient and now my crippled 5260 truly is a 5660 in most respects, aside from having large memory. But that no longer matters. |

stadams, could you be more specific on the 0805 caps? I looked at DigiKey and there's a lot of different ones. Since your conversion was successful, I plan on doing it the same way. Where did you place the 5th cap? at C68? |

If you'd like, I may be able to get some for you at work and just ship them out. I'll let you know tonight if for some reason I can't get them and I'll try to look up the DigiKey part.
And yes, I placed the 5th cap at C68. It was required for the way I did it. You may be able to dig up the thread where myself and AOTMA discussed it a while back. |

I just looked and I have extras here at home, I can send you six so you have an extra just in case. As for cost of parts, I only need to be reimbursed for cost of a stamp since I can get these at work for free anyway. BTW, I also have an extra brand new serial console cable if you'd be interested in buying it. IM me for details. |

Here's the greatest achivement of my life: The completed serial port for the 5260. It was more of a pain than I thought it'd be (only because I didn't know which pins on the chip I should use), but in the end, it works perfectly.
Thanks go out to everyone for their help. Especially stadams72 for the caps, and all the previous posters/threads before me. The FAQ was also helpful.
Hopefully, future adventurous newbs will have an easier time than I.
edit: I still have an extra LTC1386CS if anyone wants it. [text was edited by author 2002-12-07 17:13:51] |

marathonmikeBeer. You can only rent it join:2001-12-12 Princeton, NJ | reply to uziq good idea using the mini jack. All you need is three three connections anyway. |
|
uziq join:2002-11-17 Saint Louis, MO | reply to Michail I was going to order it from Digikey, but they don't have the right size chip. So I ordered it directly from Linear Technology. You gotta order two of them though (for a minimum order). So after shipping, it ended up to be around $16 for both of them.
Send me an IM if you'd like to buy my extra one. |

 | Don't even bother with the chip, just do the serial port mod found here: »The Unofficial SpeedStream 5260 ---> 5660 FAQ »HELP! I Can't upgrade my 5260 after flashing Firmware 2.2.x on it! What do I do?
I just did it 'n it worked perfectly |

marathonmikeBeer. You can only rent it join:2001-12-12 Princeton, NJ | reply to uziq I did it with one 1489 chip and only a 5v supply. You can use one of the receivers as a driver into your computer. It's not necessary to drive -12 into your computer. +5 and 0 will work. |
|
 | reply to uziq Kool, how did you do it with only 1 chip? |
|
MichailPremium join:2000-08-02 Boynton Beach, FL kudos:1 | reply to uziq Is the mini jack part of the LTC1386CS chip or can you use any type of serial connector? I guess it would be possible to even rig up a USB connection. |
