| Prestige 645 setup questions I am using Earthlink DSL, and bought a Prestige 645 on eBay to have a backup and also as a cheap and easy way to be able to use DSL in another part of the house with a different computer. I followed the Zyxel site quickstart instructions to set it up on the lan using zyxel built in pppoe, all the lights went on, no ops. I am also unable to telnet into the modem with 192.168.1.1-even tried a reset. But while playing with it, I decided to set up a pppoe connection using XP pppoe-and that seems to work fine. Still can't talk to the modem, though. Any thoughts on how to get entry? I can just leave it alone and it seems to work, but the other computer doesn't have XP so it looks like I will need to install a pppoe client there. No idea of its original pedigree--front just says prestige 600 series, back says prestige 645 with no other indicators. Thanks, Ed. |

| Re: Prestige 645 setup--more info I was finally able to access the SMT interface by setting the IP address in TCP/IP to an on-net 192.168.1.15. But I must have set something wrong when enabling pppoe, because when I was finished I could not get name server access from the Zyxel, and could longer use my Broadmax modem at all--got a "fail" at "test pppoe server connection". Talked to Earthlink tech support for a while with no real help, except issuing a trouble ticket. Went in and reset the Zyxel back to bridge mode, and now the Broadmax works fine and the Zyxel works using the built in XP PPPOE. But I don't understand where the pppoe interference is, since the boxes are never online at the same time, and the pppoe clients are allegedly in the firmware. I think I'll leave it alone for now, but would appreciate any insights. Thanks; Ed. |

Have you played any more with the SMT interface on your 645? I am dealing with the same issues and haven't been able to get in. How did you get into the 645? Did you use FTP, telnet, or an internet browser? Any help would be appreaciated.

| If it is not blocked you should be able to use telnet to access the SMT interface (I don't know about the newer 645M+ models). I don't belive that it is accessible via FTP. Depending on your ISP you may not be able to access the SMT interface because telnet may be blocked by the config file. See the following threads for more info on alternate passwords, and config/firmware updating.

| reply to HSOJ I just set my NIC to an IP address on the same subnet (I think I used 192.168.1.2) as the 645 and used the telnet commands from the command prompt. telnet 192.168.1.1 should bring up the password request so you can enter "1234" and continue. If it doesn't like that password, follow the "reset" procedure in the manual with the button on the bottom. Never did figure out why Zyxel brand PPPOE won't work on Earthlink, so switched to a Speedstream 5660. Good luck; Ed. |

| I switched to PPPOE via telnet, per the instruction manual and never got it to work. No XP PPOE; XP PPPOE is implemented by setting up a pseudo-connectoid, not by just plugging in to the LAN port. I looked for more information, and the Earthlink DSL modem page at »home.earthlink.net/~biaachmonkie···ndex.htm says "We do not support the router versions use of pppoe, we only support bridged operation." without further explanation. Since it left the link unusable by the Broadmax modem, per my earlier messages, I decided not to pursue it further. Back to eBay it goes! |

| From that site Earthlink username must be in one of the following formats:
ELN/username@earthlink.net
or
username@mindspring.com
Try manually specifying PPPoE "Service Name" (in menu 11.1 using telnet) as mindspring.com instead of blank. If it does not work try 0 (digit zero) as well.
Also there is PPPoE debugging possible from the CI promt. Check my response to the following post:
»Zyxel 642R-11
Your other Brodmax modem probably could not connected because your PPPoE server is probably taking some timeout for repeated unsuccessful logins (blacklisting). There is no other reason.
