This should be one of the few times you will ever need to download the new installer from the webpage. The new updater included in v1.1 can automatically get program updates for you (among other improvements such as showing descriptions of the updates). Regards, -Javacool |

Thanks spy1, for the news. Peeps seem to like this one; I've gotta give it try. I'm now using Adaware and Spybot. Will Spyware Blaster complement these two, or is it overkill? |

It isn't in any way overkill - it'll compliment those two programs nicely. (So you'll have scanning, cleaning, AND protection against spyware.) Regards, -Javacool [text was edited by author 2002-11-25 13:42:44] |

Javacool Boy, is my face red! I completely missed the original discussion of your program when you posted over a month ago! Found it here: » Completely prevent spyware from being installed...I must check out "Best topics over last three months" more often. Kudos to you for a very original approach to spyware prevention. I can see now that this will work quite nicely with Adaware and Spybot S&D. Will install tonight--Thank you! |

There is a thread about this at the Wilders forums ( » www.wilderssecurity.com/ ··· did=5112 ). You can find the file, and instructions on how to install it, here: » lettermanstationery.trip ··· imes.htmquote: MSCOMCTL OCX Common control from Microsoft. This version, 6.0.81.77, is 495k zipped.
Download MSCOMCTL.zip 495k
Unzip the file and save it to the C:\Windows\SYSTEM folder (SYSTEM32 folder if running Windows 2000 or XP). If an old version currently exists, temporarily rename it or move it to another folder for safe keeping. Now we'll register the control. Click on Start|Run and type:
regsvr32 MSCOMCTL.OCX
into the box, then click OK. The text entered must be exact. It may help to copy from this page to the clipboard and paste it into the run box so there are no mistakes. Click OK. Windows will tell you it's registered, and you are on your way.
The file is not currently included in the SpywareBlaster installer. I may make a separate small installer that would automate this process for the small percentage of users who do not have it. (As otherwise it would almost double the size of the SpywareBlaster installer.) Regards, -Javacool [text was edited by author 2002-11-25 16:15:01] |

Thanks javacool. Great idea. Kill those bits! I had the same problem as ZZZZZZZ, with the runtime error 339. Your instructions totally sorted me and the program runs sweet as a nut. Looks good. Thanks |

What more can I say. Thanks again, Javacool. I was one of those rare ones that had to d/l the extra MSCOMCTL OCX, but it's done and all is running smoothly. Most appreciated in keeping me out of trouble. I need everything I can get! I am now sending this entire thread on to someone very special to me so that they will have the benefit of what we already have here at DSLR. |

Well - that's a debatable topic. Personally, I believe ActiveX is seriously flawed altogether and should be completely disabled. But I realize many legitimate sites require it (and thus created SpywareBlaster). If you do decide to enable ActiveX, make sure ALL "download unsigned ActiveX" and "initialize ActiveX controls not marked as safe" options are still disabled, and the "download signed ActiveX" option is set to prompt (never just set it to enable - or anything can be installed without you knowing). A more secure way of doing this would be to completely disable all ActiveX (even signed control download) in the Internet Zone, and set signed control download to prompt in the Trusted Zone. Then you can place any sites that require ActiveX (such as WindowsUpdate) in your Trusted Zone. But getting back to your question: you will never be able to enable ActiveX "safely", but with SpywareBlaster (and safe web browsing practices) it is much safer than the defaults Microsoft leaves you (especially if you set signed ActiveX controls to prompt).
