| Possible new X3 modem and router conflict...
I'm using the new X3 modem from directv DSL. I recieved it when I moved to my new home last week. I was previously using the X2 modem with my router flawlessly in my old house. The X3 modem looks great and it is as small as my Speedstream 2623 wireless/wired router.
The X3 works fine if connected through ethernet straight into my computer. The problem I'm having is that once I get the X3 hooked up to my router I can only surf like 3-4 pages and then I can't access the Internet. I also noticed that the new internal ip for the X3 is »192.168.10.1 (not 10.5.2.1) and the admin address for my router is »192.168.254.254 .
Does anyone know if the fact that both the router and X3 have similar IP addresses has anything to do with it? If so what IP address range should I use?
I've tried changing the IP address and range of my router to 90.0.0.1, 192.168.100.1 and 192.168.255.254 all with subnet 255.255.255.0 (X3 is 192.168.10.1 sub 255.255.255.252). I've also tried using a different router (Speedstream SS2602 wired router) and I get the same problem.
Let me know if anyone esle is experiencing this issue. |

| You may be the first person here in this forum with an actual X3, did they send you a manual with it? How about a user guide on the installation CD....I'd be very curious to see if it's the same .pdf file (if they haven't changed it, it doesn't sound like it would be of much help in configuring the new modem to work with a router). |

| Yeah it has an new X3 pdf doc. But I don't know if there is anything there that would help. I do see a home networking feature (connect & protect package $9.95/month) but I don't feel like paying for it since I have a router.
Do you have any suggestions? |

| Well, first off, how big is the pdf file?
Can you zip it up and attach it to a post in this thread here?
You can do that from the Got attachments? link above the Message text box on the right side (if the file size is small enough that it can be uploaded within the 90 second time limit anyway).
I think myself and others would like to see what it says anyway. Since no one else here has apparently yet been given the X3 modem, I think we may be treading on new ground.
If the file size is too big to upload we might want to consider other means to get this out so a solution can be determined. [text was edited by author 2002-12-02 13:30:33] |

| reply to cyberwisdom Having a similar IP should *not* cause problems with a router. At worst it would just prevent you from being able to access the internal pages. Still, if the router is 192.168.10.1, you can still use 192.168.0.x on your LAN with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and have everything since 192.168.10.x will be seen as an outside address. Of course, nothing is entirely certain, could be bugs in either the router or the modem that cause weirdities in that situation. You definitely don't want to use 90.x.x.x, those are public IPs.
It will probably help to narrow down the problem. When the internet stops working can you still get to the admin pages? Do they still say that DSL is up? What happens when you PING an address?
try ping www.dslreports.com
Do you see the IP address?
then try
ping 209.123.109.175
If the second works but the first doesn't, then it's a DNS problem.
You may also check that your router's firmware is up to date.

| When the Internet is down I can still access the Admin page on my router. Actually everytime I access or refresh the admin page on the router I can surf another 3-4 pages then the internet is down not the router.
I can't ping anything (IP or www) when it is down. I downloaded all the latest firmware updates.
I'm going to post the PDF file on a server for everyone to download (It's to big to attach here 3.6mb zipped). Give me a few minutes. |

| reply to cyberwisdom Have you tried putting your DirecTV DSL static IP information into the router instead of using it's DHCP mode?

| reply to cyberwisdom Very interesting reading so far...
Can you take some screen shots from your Gateway Home Page @ »192.168.10.1 and any links to subsequent configuration pages if they exist also? |

| reply to cyberwisdom I will keep you posted....figured i should register...so I am now testing my username and password.
So are they just now sending out these X3's. Looks nice, well built (not cheap plastic, but quality plastic). Well labeled ports on the back...not too busy with lights on the front.
Look for my update tonight...it better work with a Cable/DSL router or I will not be happy...but I don't see why it wouldn't...if you fake the MAC Address on the Router the gateway should not be able to tell what is connected to it unless there is something in the software that you install that chats with the gateway. |

| Well....it works!
Here is what I did, and I don't know if it matters...but I did NOT use the CD that was included...
I read the Linux/Unix part of the "quick start" guide and determined that the software is completely not needed.
I connected the "Gateway" to my network.
Setup my computer to DHCP (W2K).
typed "ipconfig /renew" at the command prompt. It was assigned a 192.168.10.64 or 63 (forget) address.
Went to "http://192.168.10.1" as instructed on the start up guide under Linux/Unix.
Entered my phone # and it thought about something for a few minutes...then said to reboot my computer.
Being smart (I am a network admin) I knew that it just wanted to refresh the IP address. I again went to the command prompt:
typed: "ipconfig /release" waiting a few seconds typed: "ipconfig /renew" got my "static" DirectvDSL IP Address that was assigned to me.
Went to a web browser and everything worked..
Back at the command prompt I typed: "ipconfig /all" Wrote everything down.
Setup Linksys Router for DHCP (will try static tonight), and "cloned" my Laptops MAC address (don't know if this is needed, but what the heck).
I ran the DSLReports Speed tests, went to about 15 websites, VPNed into work and moved a file off of the file server, SSHed to a friends server, FTPed a file from Microsoft, and streamed some RA for about 10 minutes... The connection never stopped working.
....Soooo...it would appear that there is *NO* issue with this new slick looking X3 "Gateway" and a Cable/DSL Router.
Now I am off to point my Domain name dns to my new static IP Address!
BTW I am 17,830feet from the CO, getting ~600dwn/200up. Not too bad! Better then I was expecting. |
