well, shark fin soup is supposed to be a delicacy...isn't it? And I think I will start calling the new one the mushroom, hehe...

Maybe they should have warning stickers on the outside too?

Do not eat me

Do not attempt to eat the gateway.
What they are really saying is...If you don't return the gateway after service termination, don't cry to us when we make you eat it!

Maybe those genius folks at DirectTV DSL know Hayward, personally. They must have taken him literally.

I mean, didn't his avatar graphic of the Golden Retriever used to say "A Whole World to Chew" ?

But then again, dogs cannot read - - or can they ? Or maybe it was a message intended for pet owners who would take the necessary precautions.

Anyone know if BSFA Speedstream STH modems are edible, or taste better ? I don't recall seeing anything written like that in BSFA manual or Earthlink's. Maybe just another reason to switch away from DTV DSL.

Anyone glad that statement was NOT left out from the manual prior to the manual's publishing ?

No wonder they charge like $499.00 if you DON'T return the gateway after cancelling their DSL service. Doesn't the fair market value for DTV gateways start at, like, $199.00/lb. ?

Funny you should mention that. They recently reduced the price. From the service agreement on www.directvdsl.com:

"If you fail to return the equipment to DIRECTV Broadband within the requisite period, you agree to pay a $199 Equipment Fee, which will be charged in accordance with Section 4.0 below."

Good to see that they are keeping up with the value of PC hardware...sort of $500 was simply a ridiculous figure.

It is probably like a Circuit City black friday deal;

You have about 2 days to cancel for a cheap lost gateway charge...

I can unfortunately think of two possibilities on what could have happened, now that I've stopped laughing.

A) Someone has/had done this previously and the results were not pretty. (Crunchy)

B) They're going to begin a mass marketing campaign to target AoHell users and want to protect their equipment accordingly.

And if none of those apply, my sub-response is: THE LAWYERS are HAVING a LITTLE TOO MUCH involvement in products these days.

C) After they've gone bankrupt and drain everyone's credit cards leaving them with just the gateway left, thoughts may occur...

Mike, I already called my credit card company and they will not accept any further charges on my account from DirecTV unless I confirm it by phone. I highly recommend all subscribers to contact their credit card companies immediately in case of over-billing. Credit Card companies can immediately "red-flag" charges from specified accounts, contacting the card holder prior to approval.
