| If it's an avi try this little sucker on it.
It will tell you which codec it uses.
If it's an mpeg file, make sure you can view MPEG2 video by having a software DVD player.

no need for a software DVD player ever im not saying you cant have one but WMP will play all just dl a MPEG 2 codec like this
