I paid $60 for dish and receiver. I declined the free install.

It has paid for itself already.

Only if you're buying a multi-sat dish and then only if you buy retail.

Multi-sat dish at Radio Shack: $150

Round dish at Radio Shack: $50

Multi-sat dish on eBay: $100

Round dish on eBay: $30

Just a couple of examples. Most have round dishes, though it still adds up if stolen multiple times.

that same man claims there is a choice for cable in Manhattan.
AIUI, there are a few buildings where residents can choose between TWC and RCN -- but they're few and far between. (RCN is one of the only cable companies that doesn't require exclusive contracts with apartment owners/condo associations/co-op boards.)

There's also building codes....I don't remember the details but in Queens I was prevented from installing a dish....something to do with the number of floors your building has....

And they are stolen everywhere...not just in the Ghetto...I lived in Astoria (which I notice you do now) for six years and I think my neighbor had his stolen three times....
thank you Lev. that same man claims there is a choice for cable in Manhattan. not one person I know had a choice and I know people all over.

satellite isn't a viable option in the city because if you live on a lower floor they put the dish on the roof making it susceptible to theft.
Huh? In the ghetto maybe, but not everywhere in the city. Besides, the dish is the cheapest part of your system and is pretty useless without an IRD.

what can be said here? we are getting screwed and the only choice is to switch to satellite or have nothing. satellite isn't a viable option in the city because if you live on a lower floor they put the dish on the roof making it susceptible to theft.
we were let down by the government with de regulation. BOTH parties are equally at fault. people should refuse to pay the increases. that would be interesting but impossible to organize. Americans are to apathetic. it is a different time.
