Re: Thank You Cable Companies!

Satellite companies, at least the ones that I have been trying to deal with the past 3 weeks makes my local monopoly cable company almost look good. I have 3 TV's and 2 Tivos. All I want to know is how I hook up the Tivos to the satellite dish that I want to buy. Yes, I have to buy 2 "satellite" Tivos. But from who and who puts them in? In calling the satellite companies no one has a clue about Tivo's. The icing on the cake was today. I called a place in Massachusetts and before I could even find out any answers, I had to give the person my name, address and social security number. Why do I have to give someone a social security number when all I want is to find out what to buy? The satellite people are right up there, in my estimation, with the customer service level of my local "friendly" cable company. At this point calling my 80 year old father in Florida and asking him if he still has the rabbit ears from the 50's is making more and more sense. Understand I have no problem buying whatever it is I need but no satellite company that I have called will tell me what I need to buy and who will put it in.

Re: Thank You Cable Companies!

You should not have given your SS#...if you call an company you should not have to give your number for no reason, especially over the phone.

No, you do not have to buy new Tivo's. Your external Tivo, and it sounds like what you have, should still work fine.

However, there is a MAJOR advantage to having the combination Tivo/DirecTV box (or UTV/DirecTV box) that you may not be aware of.

When your external Tivo records the material, it has to take the already uncompressed video and audio and re-compress it into a format for storage on the external Tivo. This is why you see record times of 30/60 hours (high or low compression quality). This is also why there is a quality loss. Always.

However, the combination Tivo/UTV and DirecTV boxes don't store video this way. Instead of re=compressing the expanded video/audio, they instead store the RAW FEED from the satellite system BEFORE it is ever processed.

So when you play back on a combination box, it is feeding the exact same raw satellite feed that the receiver would have gotten if it came from directly from the satellite.

The result is ZERO quality loss, and more true-to-life recording time claims. If your box is rated for 35 hours, you will get very close to that.
