No, you do not have to buy new Tivo's. Your external Tivo, and it sounds like what you have, should still work fine.
However, there is a MAJOR advantage to having the combination Tivo/DirecTV box (or UTV/DirecTV box) that you may not be aware of.
When your external Tivo records the material, it has to take the already uncompressed video and audio and re-compress it into a format for storage on the external Tivo. This is why you see record times of 30/60 hours (high or low compression quality). This is also why there is a quality loss. Always.
However, the combination Tivo/UTV and DirecTV boxes don't store video this way. Instead of re=compressing the expanded video/audio, they instead store the RAW FEED from the satellite system BEFORE it is ever processed.
So when you play back on a combination box, it is feeding the exact same raw satellite feed that the receiver would have gotten if it came from directly from the satellite.
The result is ZERO quality loss, and more true-to-life recording time claims. If your box is rated for 35 hours, you will get very close to that.
