Animation: 9 - This beautiful and stylish thriller reaches near perfection not only in its genre, but in the world of animation in general. This movie fills the eyes with absolutely exciting action sequences and remarkable backgrounds. The animation is blended with very little separation, some very amazing CG touches to an already sleek style of anime. There are some noticable character differences as it seems some character designs may have generated from a different artist or movie. Visually it commands your interest, telling a great story of Vampires and action.
Storyline: 7 -- This release bears no connection to the original 1985 Vampire Hunter D except for the main character D. Although on the surface, this movie might show signs of being made with the typical Vampire recipes, its not. It starts to develop slowly, but with a little patience develops some deep rooted plots in the chaos. It does a great job of adding the right mixture of angst, romance, exploration of the vampire needs versus human sentiment to a chilling tale.
Characters: 8 -- This is a movie where the characters begin to bloom late in the movie. You have to scratch the surface to see what is underneath. The relationship of D to Leila provides the movie with depth and some great antagonism. Meier Link even provides some impressive depth to the movie, and he actually is impressive by movie end. Personally, I feel the character designs stray from the original ideas and sometimes they leave questioning them. Some of the supporting cast come across as corny, but bottom line is it all fits together. That's all I will say to keep from spoiling the movie.
Soundtrack: 8 -- The music is somewhat over the top like the movie, which works out fine. I found myself enjoying the haunting music that accompanied the slow, creepy scenes the most. Great musical score.
Overall: 8 - The movie does great things for its genre. For me to praise this Vampire movie says a lot, because I am not immediately won over by the overpowering sexuality and "why oh why am I a Vampire" angst in the name of gore. Its gorgeous production and creative style do draw me and keep me suspended till the credits. Personally, I really don't buy into Vampire Hunters riding thru Old Western towns in search of Vampires who hide in their European Medieval Castles all the while riding their half-robotic horses. Like I said before, the fact I don't finish some chores doing this movie is more than enough praise. I just sat emerged in a movie I wasn't going to give a chance. The Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust was released theatrically as Vampire Hunter D: 2000 in Japan, but was originally recorded in English, so sorry for you hardcore sub-4 life fans. Yoshiaki Kawajiri gets a 2 thumbs up for this effort. -- DCExec Member, Member of 'StarFire Seven' & Undisputed BBR Karaoke Champion! |
