Anon | Tech savvy users -- questions about the router
Hello folks. Been using DirecTV DSL (used to be Telocity) for some time now, been quite happy with it and my Linksys router. But aything that is a good deal doesn't last long, so...
Now I'm looking at Megapath, who seems to be the -only- other ISP that will offer me ADSL (everyone else says IDSL only). I spoke with one of their sales guys tonight but I don't think he really had any clue about my questions, so maybe the more tech savvy among you will know?
Does Megapath actually give you two static IPs? What I mean is, with my current ISP, the gateway gets a real IP, and my computer gets one. Both IPs are "real", both are WAN addresses you can hit from anywhere (as opposed to LAN addresses like 192.168.1.50). I hook up the router, which takes the 2nd IP and I'm a happy camper. Does Megapath work the same way since their gateway includes a router? Or are all the machines you plug into it going to get a LAN address?
Second question, probably related to the first, is why the sales guy told me that Linksys routers won't work with their gateway/router.
Thanks guys, hopefully you are more knowledgeable than their own staff!

| The sales guy was right. The router they provide is far superior to your Linksys (Fisher Price My First Router). You could continue to use it, but it would be like trading in your BMW for a Hyundai. The Speedstream 5861 or Netopia R45413 are excellent routers capable of handling multiple static IP address, while your Linksys can only handle one. Plus those routers won't buckle like a belt if you're doing any heavy uploading. MegaPath provides one static IP with their basic setup, but you can buy up to ten extra.
Good luck. |

Not entirely true. I've managed to get my linksys router behind my Zyxel Prestige DSL modem/router just fine. It was a bit of a hack but I needed MORE port forwarding flexibility than what the Zyxel had. |

| I believe you can request up to one more IP address with a home office SOHO account giving you a total of 2 usable.
But the default set up is where each computer on the DSL modem/router will get a LAN IP address. [text was edited by author 2002-12-14 12:57:50] |

| what kind of dsl modems/routers they have now? i only have a few choices...1 is megapath and the other is a maybe...it's covad for the maybe need to know if it's anything like my linux router BBIAgent setup....can have the lan setup with router taking ip address and all the systems on lan take up a lan ip and if i need to run a server behind the dhcp, i just tell it what i want access to and it makes that system routeable |

| They use Netopia 4541 ADSL routers. Your static IP(s) will be configured to sit on the router and in turn the router will utilize DHCP and it'll throw, to all the PCs behind it a 192.168.1.x IP addy. For servers and such you can designate a specific WAN IP to forward all ports to a specific internal IP or just specific ports to specific IPs. It's a good versatile router that'll handle everything you want to do and unlike most routers you can assign a /28 subnet to it and route pretty much any port on any specific IP anywhere. | reply to drmorley You are all more tech savvy than I am. I am a former DTV DSL user and switched to Megapath. They sent me a Netopia Cayman 3341 router. I can connect one PC at a time with it but can't configure my Linksys router to work with it. Megapath tech support said that I needed to purchase additional IP addresses but I don't understand why because it worked fine before. Can someone provide more detailed instructions for me to configure the Linksys router to connect to Megapath and in turn connect my three PCs?
Many thanks in advance. |
