| To all DTV DSL customers who have joined the forum
First off, welcome to our forum and hope you decide to stay!
I've been in several meetings where the issue on how to properly and legally deal with releasing your DSL lines can be done in the timeliest manner.
SBC is committed to making this transition as easy as possible for all concerned. Let me say this and get it straight:
SBC, in no way, WILL HINDER ANY CUSTOMER, from finding a new DSL provider of their choice. We are working as hard as possible to give the DTV customers who use our lines a seamless transfer with little, or preferably 0, down time.
Again, welcome to our forum. I would hope you would look around, ask questions not only of our official support team, but also other customers as you look for a new provider.

Thanks for posting this. I have a question.
I have already arranged with PacBell/SBC to activate DSL service. (I was able to do this because I have 2 phone lines in the house, so the service is being activated on the line that is NOT used by DirectTV, hence no line release issue).
I've been using a home networking, wireless router with my DirectTV gateway, and I am worried about whether it will work with SBC and a dynamic IP.
Right now, the DirectTV gateway is connect to my desktop computer via the USB port, and to the wireless router via the ethernet port - in turn, other computers can use either an ethernet connection from the router, or a wireless card.
I'm wondering if the SBC connection will allow the same, and if there is something I need to know about connecting it. The rep at PacBell/SBC told me that it would work, but I was probably talking to someone in sales, not tech -- so I want to verify that this will all work.
Thanks for any help you can give me on this. |

SBC has a Home Networking option, thru 2Wire that has the same capabilities as a DTV Gateway, plus it utilizes HPNA as another networking option using your existing house wiring.
Since you say you've already placed an order with SBC, register with this site and send me some contact info via IM or site e-mail. This will ensure your privacy.

| reply to kmac1 Thanks for the welcome we ordered SBC DSL today after much calling around to other providers. As we also have two phone lines we ordered it on the main line that did not have DSL to avoid any switching problems. The ordering process went very smoothly but it was a bit weird as the people taking our order seemed excited we were getting the 1 yr 49.95 Deluxe 768-1.5/256K package (is this uncommon?). According to the people who took the order we should be running by the 26th. As we are fairly close to the CO (about 8600ft) I am hoping that we will be able to get the max speed of 1.5 like we currently do with DTV on our second line, I will however have to go into the attic to change the homerun for our DSL over to the correct line before it will work at all.
If we have any problems with it I can post in this forum I guess which will be nice as not a problems need to tie up a phone support rep or tie me up with waiting on hold!
Thanks,

PacBell uses PPPoE for its authentication and that takes ~20% of your speed, so expect numbers from 1200-1300 down. |

| Actually, pppoe doesn't use quite that much, though it's part of the overhead. Tcp/IP uses anywhere from 15 to 20% depending on the route and the number of packets that get retransmitted, etc, etc. But roughly the range of speeds (in theory, at max) would be:
1536 * .8 = 1228.8 to 1536 * .85 = 1305.60
But that'd be with a static IP (read: only overhead for tcp/ip not ATM or pppoe). So if you factor in a little overhead for ATM, and then add on pppoe, you can expect roughly 1200 for pppoe on a 1536 sync rate with DSL. But depending on the route, you may see slightly higher (~1250 ish). -- "I drank what?" -Socrates |

| ditto. PPPoE uses something like 0.05% overhead and tcp/ip about 5% and ATM about 15%-20% (notice the abouts as they do vary) But as jkc120 said, you will see about 80 to 85% of your sync rate in throughput. -- "Great things come to those who wait" - ME

| If you synched up at 1.5 on one ISP you SHOULD be able to on another....it all goes through ASI and they are the ones responsible for getting your sync rate. -- "Great things come to those who wait" - ME(not originally but I do say it) |

Only 0.05%? When I was on cable, I was getting 1450+ and it used TCP/IP too. I thought the PPPoE was responsible for more than that. Maybe they set a higher sync rate, I don't know. Found this article on a google search and he suggests a higher number. |

Well that is what I am hoping however since they are different phone numbers/lines you never know.
Also as mentioned it is the ATM overhead that is greater for more on this you can see »www.cisco.com/warp/public/121/pv···z.html#8

Any idea how and when a DirecTV DSL customer could get as "seamless as possible" transfer to Yahoo SBC DSL? -- Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental. |

| reply to kmac1 A comment about competition
I find it ironic that yesterday when I called SBC they were unable to discuss transferring the service on the line used by DTV - but tonight I got a call from Earthlink. When I asked the rep who called whether Earthlink was working with DTV to take over the accounts, she said no, there was no such arrangement, but DTV had provided their "leads" (i.e. customer names and phone numbers).
I just thought the people in charge of marketing at SBC should know that this is happening. I realize that the people answering the telephone don't make the rules, but it would make a lot more sense if SBC could at least service customers who initiate the call to them, given the fact that competitors are now doing targeted telemarketing. |

I have been told that sbc has been limiting ddsl for full up speed my max was 63 but neighbors with sbc 128 will sbc do this to other isp's using there lines? |

| reply to kmac1 Dan: DirecTV DSL and DSLReports' speed test did not get along with one another. You actually have a 128+ kbps upstream speed, for some reason DSLReports shows it as 60-70kbps unless you turned Path MTU discovery off. If you actually FTP a file somewhere you'll see the full 128kbps speeds.
