 | Circuit ID 101-514-638 (from DTV) Potential DirecTV DSL refugee here, and I thought this wasn't going through from the other threads and the conversation I had with Covad on Monday after they sent me an invoice (but no charge had been made).
Well to my surprise, I get this email this morning:
We are pleased to inform you that we have confirmed DSL service availability at your address. Your line is scheduled to be prepared for DSL service on December 23, 2002. There is no need for you to be home on this date.
A DSL Installation Kit will be shipped to your address within 24-48 hours. Once you receive the DSL Installation Kit, you will be ready to complete the installation by following the easy-to-use instructions in your DSL Installation Kit.

 | Well, I just got off the phone with Covad and they are apparently doing hot-swaps now the same as Speakeasy is offering to DTV customers changing over |

 | Well being that you got your equipment today, tell us how your migration went I hope to hear your services are up and running -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· |

 | Well, I'm connected and online with Covad through the Covad ZyXEL all of 5 minutes here. Pretty smooth so far, my DTV connection went down sometime between 5-5:30pm, and just finished swapping the equipment and installing Enternet.
Now I guess I'm off to tweak my connection, I'm sure my tweak settings are not right as they weren't done for PPPoE, but I will do a speed test first, then the rest of the routine.
Looking good so far! -- Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental. |

2. Speed test: »/speedtests/12···40701452
3. Line Quality: »/speedresults/···5/947982 4. Plan: TeleSurfer Plus DSL+IP - Shared Line (Self-Install) 5. PPoE 6. Downloaded version of Enternet 7. Win2K 8. 1500/128 9. no network (single pc). 10. no router. 11. 9600 feet from CO per dslreports.com
I'm curious about the Line quality test...it shows a 4% loss in the medium bandwidth test (never had line quality problems before).
Also, how do I setup PPPoE to connect automatically when I startup?
I'm planning on buying a router soon to take care of that for me...basically was thinking about the Linksys 4 port wired version (or comparable) if that is a good choice. -- Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental. |

| Being that your on win2k, Enternet only allows a MTU to be at a maximum of 1486.
You could try using RASPPPoe. Works fine on Covad connections. And it allows your MTU to be at 1492 for that matter. Simple protocal. It's just a thin and smaller for that matter. Just some options for you to look at »user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/
If your curious about Setting MTU on Win2k, here's a link: »Tweaking FAQ »MTU: Setting it with Enternet, Win95/98/98se/ME/2K/XP
Line quality looks pretty clean. Don't concern yourself too much on the medium bandwith portion of the test. It takes in factors of your upload measure. Lower upload rates usually tend not to do so well on this portion of the test. DirecTV synced at a 160kbps cap thus it why you passed in your previous trials, compared to the 128kbps cap that Covad offers.
To pass, it requires an upload speed of about 120kbps or higher (or so I think).
Again, you're line is very clean at this point So don't worry.
Now your RWIN can be bumped a little. Perhaps we can squeeze a few kbits out of there
Let's bump up RWIN a tad bit.
Download DR TCP to your desktop. Set TCP Rec Window to 25452 Set Window Scaling, Time Stamping, Selective Acks, Path MTU Discovery, and Black Hole Detection all to default. Set Max Dup Acks and TTL both blank. Save, exit, and reboot.
Post a new tweak test result and a speed test result from: »sfo.speakeasy.net
If you went on and raised MTU or used RASPPPoE, give me holler or stop by the tweaks forum if you wish
And yes, a router is must if you want convenience -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· [text was edited by author 2002-12-24 00:26:25] |

 | Ok I checked the faq on the mtu and I don't have any registry entry as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/ Services/Class/Net/000n/Ndi/params/MaxFrameSize/"max" .... There is no "Class" section under the CurrentControlSet tree as per above. Anyway, here's the new tweaktest: » ny-monitor.dslreports.com/tweak/···enternetand speedtest from speakeasy: » /speedtests/12···40706660A little slower on the downstream than from the linkline test I did earlier. The one thing that is odd is after a couple of times this one and before making rwin changes and rebooting...my computer does not want to connect to the internet (after doing the Enternet connect even). Once I had to uninstall and reinstall and it worked...last time, I rebooted (twice). Opened and closed my browser a couple of times (kind of a hassle) but, then seemed ok again. So the advantage of RASPPPoe is the MTU setting? Does it also allow for connecting automatically on startup? I did see a setting for that on the Enternet software but after selecting it the last time and not being able to connect I wasn't sure if that was just coincidence after making a prior rwin change before posting. |

Scroll a bit further down the page » Tweaking FAQ » MTU: Setting it with Enternet, Win95/98/98se/ME/2K/XPIN FAQ: For Win2K/XP users, this appears to be the proper place to set MTU: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE 10318}\000n MaxFrameSize = "1486" - where n = the key containing this entry: DriverDisc = "Efficient Networks..." 1486 appears to be the maximum MTU settings for Win2K/XP using Enternet software. Anyhow, My experiences with Enternet wasn't a happy one when I was setting up a win2k system a while back. It was problematic, similar to few of the issues you are having. Not to mention a few DNS errors. I dropped enternet, uninstalled and used RASPPPOE and it cleaned up a few of mess enternet left behind As for enternet to have connect upon startup, I have never toyed with it since installing RASPPPOE. Your settings do like fine. Seems your line is throttling at its max there, let's lower the RWIN a bit time being. Set it to 21210. RASPPPOE does allow for connection upon boot up. | Ok, thanks...I will try that change with the rwin and post back. I guess once I get this part down with the default covad installation, I will try the RASPPPOE (if it will eliminate the connection problem after making the dr tcp changes then thats a benefit in itself, though I guess once these are set there shouldn't be a need to change then).
Cool, found the registry key now too Thanks! [text was edited by author 2002-12-24 01:14:44] |

| reply to ninersfan Hi,ninersfan, You said you got "hot swap" from Covad? So you got your Covad connection then cancel the DTV DSL on the same line?? What is your tel. company? SBC? [text was edited by author 2002-12-24 02:06:24] |

| Yes, hot swap from DTV to Covad (telco is SBC pacbell, same line)... Never cancelled DTV, Covad took care of switching me over --

| reply to Meteor Dive Well, decided I didn't want to mess with the PPPoE on a regular basis so I went out yesterday and got me a deal on a Netgear RP614 router for 39.99+tax (after rebate) @ Staples (through 12/28/02).
And after a little difficulty (at first) connecting, finally figured out the PPPoE needed my username@Covad.net instead of just the username. So I entered that, got the router firmware upgrade and re-took my tests and is looking better than with DTV, happy camper here

 | Hey looks great Have you tried raising MTU to 1492 on your Router? Overall, looks tidy and clean -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· |
|
 | Thanks for that suggestion, checked the router configuration and the default setup was at 1500 when I tested before so I changed it to 1492 and my tests look pretty much exactly the same so I think I will leave it alone then, doubt I can get much better and I'm happy here
Thanks again for the help! |
|

| Strange how it turned out to be 1440 on the test page, since router controls that value.
Ah, well atleast you're up an running overall. 52 bytes difference is negligible.
Good speed + Great line = Definite Happy camper

Covad Billing Discrepancy! I'm not sure what's up with Covad offering 21.95/mo. introductory rates, free setup, free self-install and the $99 equipment fee to be returned in the form of a rebate then turning around and charging my credit card $255.13 today. Does anybody know? I've called and was told they would have to "escalate" this to the billing department...whatever that means.
Up to this point I was fairly impressed with Covad overall. |

Thats what I thought too, but I don't know why they couldn't just do that right then and there when I called and alerted Covad's billing department, and not have to "escalate-it" and get back to me in what they said might be several days. I really hope I don't have to go the route of disputing the entire charge with my credit card company. |
|
 | reply to ninersfan I was thinking about ordering adsl from COVAD. But.....
Whoa! Setup fee - $0.00 But they charged you $99.00???
And what's the deal about that Recurring Fee - $49.00? I thought they have a $21.95 1st 4 month promotion?
Please tell me how they handled this "billing discrepancy"
HAPPY NEW YEAR GUYS!! |
